Highly Specialist Neurological Occupational Therapist

An opportunity has arisen for permanent recruitment to the B7 Occupational Therapist post at HTNRU following a secondment. This post offers an exciting opportunity for an Occupational Therapist to develop specialist skills in transitional neuro‑rehabilitation. The Homerton Transitional Neurological Rehabilitation Unit (HTNRU) is a district level (level 2b), seven bed unit commissioned to rehabilitate people to return to living within the community following neurological injury or exacerbation of long term conditions.

The post holder will be responsible for the OT clinical management of patients in conjunction with a B6 OT, and also providing clinical leadership and coordination as part of the senior MDT in planning a transitional rehabilitation programme for the patients. There is a strong emphasis on positive risk assessment and management to support service users to return to the community and meaningful activities. The post holder will develop skills and knowledge in working with people with neurological rehabilitation needs including cognitive assessment and rehabilitation, a holistic approach to functional rehabilitation and discharge planning, complex client management including family support and engagement, cognitive‑communication disorders and behaviour management, project working, training and working with community services, supervising junior members of staff including rehabilitation assistants.


Main duties of the job

* Specialist occupational therapy assessment, treatment and evaluation of patients with complex physical, cognitive and challenging behavioural presentations as an autonomous practitioner.
* Ensure the patient's management is goal directed, liaising closely with the multi‑disciplinary team to enable effective discharge planning and act as a key worker when allocated.
* Be highly skilled in effective communication with patients with speech, cognitive and behavioural problems.
* Take in‑patients on home visits/ community visits independently or with other health professionals to assess for safe discharge home.
* Be an active member of the in‑service training programme.
* Deputise, as appropriate, for the service lead in times of absence.
* In conjunction with both occupational therapy colleagues and MDT members establish service priorities and contribute to the development of the service.
* Participate in monthly management and administrative meetings.
* Be actively involved and lead service development within the local area and therapy services through quality and clinical audit.
* Contribute to wider audit, clinical governance and research initiatives as required.
* Be responsible for the supervision and appraisal of students, assistants, and Band 6 occupational therapy staff.

Education / Qualifications

* Degree/diploma in Occupational Therapy recognised by COT
* HCPC registered
* Further post-graduate courses in related area
* Further study in related area
* Member of NANOT


Skills / Abilities

* Ability to assess and implement appropriate treatment for a range of neurological conditions including cognitive, perceptual and behavioural difficulties
* Able to manage caseload and to prioritise under pressure for self and team
* Demonstrate effective communication skills with all disciplines and service users to optimise management
* Clear, concise verbal and written reporting skills
* Able to supervise and appraise staff/ students and identify development/training needs
* Be familiar with Windows based packages, including word and e‑mail
* Awareness of own competency level and how to seek appropriate help
* Teaching skills with a range of groups


Experience

* Extensive experience of case management of clients with acquired neurological disorders
* Experience of working with clients with cognitive impairment and difficulties
* Experience of working in a inter–disciplinary team using joint goal setting
* Evidence of staff supervision and appraisal experience
* Team leadership potential
* Experience of working in a variety of settings including community
* Experience of working with adults with acquired brain damage
* Current Occupational Therapy practice in the delivery of services to neurologically impaired service users and their carers
* Models of Occupational Therapy practice and their application in this field
* Health needs in a diverse cultural and socio‑economic community
* Understanding of confidentiality issues
* Outcome measures and other quality issues e.g. audit
* Risk management and clinical governance issues
* Practical research skills and understanding of its use in this field
