Adult Day Programme: Clinical Nurse Specialist

Unique opportunity for nurses to practice within a specialist setting, working within our Day Programme Service. This is a wonderful opportunity to develop care co‑ordination and nursing leadership skills as part of the management teams. You will need to be a motivated, empathic, skilled and dedicated individual who can work autonomously as well as part of the wider team. Excellent communication skills in all domains are a must with an ability to work flexibly and dynamically within the various teams in the service as needed. You will be well supported in your role by a friendly, skilled MDT as well as receive regular line management and good clinical supervision in various forms.


Key Responsibilities

* Providing support to clients diagnosed with Eating Disorders via meal support, supervision, key work
* Develop and facilitate specialist therapeutic groups as part of the programme.
* Ensuring patient safety and care is maintained at a high standard
* Develop specialist risk assessment and care planning skills in a community day programme setting
* Providing supervision to junior staff and students
* Completion of audits
* Deputising for day programme manager if required


Clinical Roles

* Ensure nursing practice is in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and Mental Health Legislation, which incorporates and respects differences in respect of gender, sexuality, ethnicity, religion, culture and disability
* To ensure that planning of care occurs within the framework of CPA, that relevant local and national guidelines are adhered to and support band 5 nursing staff to ensure relevant documentation is completed
* To communicate with families and carers engaging with them to support patient care
* To act as group facilitator/co‑facilitator as required, including supervision of meals in dining room, as well as inpatient and day patient groups
* Participate in the maintenance of general and specific patient observations, accurately recording of all relevant information and report any concerns. This includes ensuring ECG’s and Venepuncture practises are completed as per patient care plan
* Participate in the insertion of Nasogastric tubes and administration of prescribed diet as per patient care plan and in line with policy and protocol
* Participate in supporting patients to eat in the dining room and role modelling supportive interventions to fellow staff
* Always act in a manner as to promote and safeguard the interests and well‑being of patients, visitors and colleagues
* Support patients to have leave of the ward providing escort if required and ensuring this does not compromise patient or ward safety
* Participate in social, occupational and psychological activities with patients, and in so doing maximise therapeutic opportunities for patients
* To ensure medications are administered as per patient’s medication chart and participate in the safe storage of medications including stock rotation and pharmacy audits
* Participate in rotational duties and working in alternative care settings as required


Management of Resources

* To deputise and provide senior nurse cover as part of the management team on the ward as required
* To assist and support in the establishment of an efficient working environment, making the most effective and efficient use of staff, supplies and services
* To utilise all available resources to the maximum benefit of the service, being aware of resource implications specific to the Ward/Department
* To ensure that agreed Trust policies and procedures are followed
* To report any maintenance requirements through the Trust processes, reporting any difficulties to the nurse in charge
* To support the investigation and handling of complaints- undertake in any disciplinary investigations, or staff performance data collection, in collaboration with the management team on the ward
* To ensure that all relevant Managers are aware of any difficulties, omissions in care or complaints, and to ensure that these are dealt with according to Trust Policy
* To take a lead role, or assist in the recruitment and selection of new staff
* To ensure that the best quality, evidence‑based service is delivered to Inpatients within the available resources
* To work as part of the management team in organising care across the service, within the resources available


Communications and Liaison

* To form a positive, therapeutic relationships with people who are experiencing acute crisis or distress in the context of partnership and trust. Using excellent communication skills
* To acquaint the Ward Manager and Matron with professional concerns and promote professional practice at all times
* To ensure that information of a confidential nature is not divulged to any unauthorised person and is stored in line with the provisions of the Data Protection Act

* To ensure patient records are kept confidential including documentation of weights and vital signs
* To maintain, as required, ongoing records of clinical activities using trust approved mediums


Research and Development

* To undertake audit as required to develop nursing practice within the services
* To participate in clinical research as directed by the Clinical Governance Team for the Service
* To keep abreast of best practice in the field of Eating Disorders and share these within the Teams
* To be involved in the setting of nursing care standards for the inpatient service, including the development, implementation and evaluation of care pathways


Training

* To contribute to activities which continue to build on a culture of shared learning and evidence‑based practice
* To keep up to date with current developments (i.e. attending conferences/ workshops, reading journals) regarding eating disorders, mental health and related issues where appropriate, incorporating these into your work and the further development of better services in the unit
* To engage in regular clinical supervision of own work
* To be aware of own professional development needs and work towards meeting these
* To ensure up‑to‑date NMC registration
* To participate in the training of students on placement, and to act as student link for local education providers, and to act as a mentor to students on placement
