Offer description

We are looking for an exceptional leader to join our Finance Team. Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer and working alongside the Director of Strategic Finance, you will play a pivotal role in building and developing the Finance Team and implementing effective systems and practices.

To succeed, you should possess the ability to provide strategic leadership and foster a culture of compassion, innovation, and inclusion, enhancing our services while supporting financial sustainability. As an expert communicator, you will be comfortable leading the sharing of complex information in a way that empowers others and facilitates contribution. You will collaborate with colleagues across the Trust and the wider Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Integrated Care system.

The Trust is currently implementing its Financial Sustainability Plan aimed at returning to financial balance. This role is crucial in leading the delivery of financial management, financial services, and procurement functions.

Your responsibilities include providing expert strategic and technical advice to the Board, Finance & Performance Committee, and Audit Committee, ensuring robust stewardship of a £1.9 billion budget. You will lead and motivate the Financial Services, Financial Management, Procurement & Supply-Chain, and Finance-Transformation teams, embedding a high-performance, digitally enabled culture.

You will own the full cycle of budget-setting, in-year performance, statutory accounts, cash and working-capital management, and drive the delivery of cost-improvement and productivity plans. Additionally, you will champion One NHS Finance principles, modernize processes and systems, and build strong partnerships across our Integrated Care System.

You will deputize for the Chief Financial Officer, acting as a visible, values-led senior leader across the Trust and on the gold on-call rota.

At NUH, you will join an executive team committed to compassionate, inclusive leadership and continuous improvement. We offer a competitive Very Senior Manager (VSM) package with NHS pension, flexible/hybrid working mainly at City Hospital with requirements to work at QMC and other ICS partners. You will have access to national NHS finance and leadership development programs, strong university links, and a culture that celebrates diversity, wellbeing, and our core values of Kind, Inclusive, Ambitious, and One Team.

With over 19,000 staff, NUH is one of the city’s largest employers, supporting local health and wellbeing through research, education, and innovation. We welcome applications from people who identify as Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic, or Disabled, as we strive for better representation.

Leadership & Governance:

* Shape and deliver the Trust’s financial strategy and annual plan in line with NHS England, DHSC, and ICS requirements.
* Lead recruitment, development, and performance of approximately 250 finance and procurement professionals, embedding continuous improvement and professional standards.
* Ensure financial controls, risk management, and compliance with standards such as Standing Financial Instructions, IFRS, and the Better Payment Practice Code.

Financial Services:

* Oversee accounts payable/receivable, treasury, cash forecasting, investment, and tax arrangements with NHS SBS.
* Ensure timely production of management accounts, statutory annual accounts, and NHSE returns, ready for audit.

Financial Management:

* Coordinate Trust-wide budget setting, forecasting, and reporting, translating strategic objectives into clear, costed targets.
* Provide insightful analysis and early-warning indicators to support decision-making and corrective actions.

Procurement & Supply Chain:

* Develop and implement the Trust’s Procurement Strategy, focusing on value for money, clinical engagement, and Model Hospital excellence.

Finance Transformation:

* Sponsor projects that modernize finance processes, data, and systems to improve efficiency and user experience.

Person Specification at a Glance:

* Degree and CCAB/CIMA qualification with at least 5 years post-qualification experience at Deputy/Director level in a large, complex NHS or comparable organization.
* Expert knowledge of NHS finance regime, proven success in large-scale turnaround and cost-improvement programs, and outstanding leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
