SEN Teacher (Secondary) – Full Time

Location: Sunderland
Contract: Full-time, permanent (term-time)
Start date: Immediate

About the role
We are looking for an innovative and compassionate SEN Teacher to work in a specialist secondary school for young people aged 11-19 with autism spectrum condition (ASC), communication and interaction needs, and learning or behavioural challenges. This is a role where ambition meets care — helping students build independence, resilience and achieve their best.

Key responsibilities

1. Develop and deliver a broad, differentiated curriculum accessible to pupils with complex needs.

2. Lead classroom teams, coordinate with teaching assistants and specialist staff to maximise student progress and engagement.

3. Promote emotional wellbeing, social skills and readiness for adult life, using strategies suited to the pupils’ needs.

4. Participate in the monitoring, evaluation and adaptation of individual learning plans.

5. Maintain high standards of safeguarding, ensure pupil dignity and nurture positive relationships across the school community.

We’re looking for

6. QTS or QTLS.

7. Experience working in a specialist or SEND secondary setting is highly desired — but enthusiasm, adaptability and commitment are key.

8. Strong communication skills, leadership potential and ability to inspire.

9. A creative and flexible approach to teaching, and the capacity to work in a dynamic environment.

What we offer

10. An opportunity to work where your teaching truly changes lives.

11. Specialist CPD and support to enhance your SEND expertise.

12. A strong team culture grounded in collaboration, kindness and high expectations.

Send your CV and a brief cover letter demonstrating your passion for specialist education and vision for this role.
