Technical Specialist (Analytical Research Support) Student And Academic Services Professional & Business Support Grade 6 - £32,080 to £38,784 per annum (depending on experience) The role Technical Operations, Resources and Services (TORS) is a large cross-university team providing specialist Technical Support for teaching, research, and commercial activities at Sheffield Hallam University. The Science and Technology (S&T) technical team supports laboratory-based activities across a range of disciplines. We are recruiting a technical specialist to primarily support practical activities within the School of Engineering and Built Environment, but also to support other areas of the University as required. In this role you would directly support laboratory-based activities including under-graduate and post-graduate student research projects, other practical teaching, research and innovation activities. Key areas of focus for this post include materials analysis, chemical analysis, microscopy/imaging and chemical engineering. We aim to enable students and staff to leverage maximum value from the laboratory facilities through provision of excellent training and support. Laboratory and chemical safety knowledge is essential. You will also need to have in-depth practical experience and knowledge of several analysis / imaging techniques with proficiency gained from method development and troubleshooting. Examples of relevant techniques include SEM; TEM; AFM; FTIR; Raman spectroscopy; mass spectrometry; TGA; DSC; DTA; DMA; dilatometry; EPR; XRF; powder XRD, micro-CT. The facilities we support also include a range of other equipment such as furnaces, PVD coaters and reactors. A background in materials science, and knowledge and experience of a wide range of the techniques listed above, would be an advantage. However, it is more important to have the aptitude and enthusiasm to learn new techniques and to train and support our students to use them. You will work closely with team members and will be expected to work flexibly and have, or develop, skills to allow you to support S&T delivery across a range of disciplines. You will be contractually enrolled into the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) – one of the largest and most generous defined benefit pension schemes in the country. Find out more about the LGPS Each year you will earn a secure pension benefit of 1/49th of your salary and the University will pay pension contributions towards the cost of this pension (currently worth about 22% of your salary). For a starting salary of £40,000, for example, the University would pay just over £8,700 in the first year of your employment and you would earn a pension of £816 p.a. for that year (payable from your State Pension Age).
