Rate of Pay: £28.79 - £38.39 per hour
Summary:
The Corporate Health and Safety Adviser plays a critical role in fostering a safe, healthy, and legally compliant work environment for Islington Council. Serving as the bridge between regulatory requirements and practical implementation, this role ensures both employees and the employer are protected from harm and liability. The post holder identifies risks, develops policies, and promotes a proactive safety culture across diverse council services.
Responsibilities:
* Lead the creation and promotion of safety management systems and support senior leadership in embedding a positive safety culture.
* Review and update council policies to maintain legal compliance, staying informed on evolving health and safety legislation and innovations
* Conduct audits of occupational health and safety management systems, develop action plans, and provide expert support in preparing risk assessments.
* Oversee the implementation of safe working practices, use environmental monitoring equipment to assess workplace conditions, and provide regular performance updates to Directors.
* Assist with monitoring the corporate health and safety budget and oversee a small fund for departmental safety initiatives.
Qualifications:
* Certified Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (CertIOSH) OR TechIOSH while studying for CertIOSH (with Graduate Membership required within 12 months of start date).
* NEBOSH Diploma, NVQ Level 5/6, NCRQ Diploma, or a degree in Occupational Health and Safety (or equivalent).
Essentials:
* Proven experience working in a health and safety environment within a local authority or a similar complex organization.
* Experience advising managers and stakeholders on complex occupational health and safety issues.
* Demonstrated ability to conduct inspections, audits, accident investigations, and interpret data to produce actionable recommendations.
