The role
As a Commissioning Engineer - Electrical, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary where you'll play a key role in supporting submarine programmes at HMNB Devonport, ensuring the Royal Navy has confidence in its national defence capabilities.
Day-to-day, you’ll carry out inspection, testing and commissioning of submarine systems.
1. Conduct thorough fault-finding diagnostics and implement effective corrective actions as required. This includes activities such as visual inspections, pressure testing, system flushing, operational checks on equipment and systems, electrical pre-operational checks, insulation resistance testing, and load testing.
2. Design and execute safe isolation procedures to enable intrusive work on submarine systems, ensuring full compliance with Devonport’s Safe System of Work management protocols.
3. Research, develop, and compile comprehensive technical documentation to support commissioning activities and associated deliverables.
4. Operate within a safety-critical environment, adhering strictly to Health and Safety at Work regulations, and ensuring compliance with relevant engineering quality and nuclear standards.
5. Foster and sustain strong working relationships across internal teams and with key stakeholders, including the Royal Navy, Ministry of Defence, and subcontractors, to ensure seamless collaboration and project success.
This role is full time, 35 hours per week and is based on site at Devonport Royal Dockyard, Plymouth.
Essential experience of the Commissioning Engineer - Electrical
6. Extensive experience in an engineering role
7. Experience of using technical system drawings and associated documentation.
8. Good planning, organisation and time management skills.
Qualifications for the Commissioning Engineer - Electrical
9. Completed a recognised Level 3 qualification/Engineering Apprenticeship
10. Completed a recognised Level 4 qualification/Engineering Apprenticeship
11. Degree in an Engineering discipline
