PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £39,800 - £44,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
We want to tell the high-quality stories from East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire that really matter to people. We want to combine breaking and developing news with accessible explanation of events. We are building story-led newsrooms in Hull and Lincoln with a focus on bigger impact content for our online audience. As an Online Senior Journalist in BBC East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire you will be key to shaping the changes we want to see, commissioning content, subbing copy and planning our output.
WHY JOIN THE TEAM
A Senior Online Journalist on the East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire team works as part of a multi-platform newsroom on stories intended for the BBC news website and app. You will be expected to carry out a range of duties including news editing as well as sub-editing. Senior Online Journalists are also involved in the forward planning of news coverage and can occasionally be deployed to cover events.
YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:
* As a Senior Journalist in the BBC East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire news online team you will work in a shift system that runs across seven days of the week covering the hours of 6am to 10pm.
* You will commission, sub-edit and publish written stories and videos and provide constructive feedback to online journalists, on-air reporters and correspondents.
* The job will involve guiding colleagues – whether they be apprentices or very experienced journalists – to deliver a whole range of stories from breaking news to those with complex and data-rich themes.
* In this senior role you will need to understand the importance of impartiality; have extensive editorial experience; sound judgement and be assertive in decision making.
* You will need to be calm under pressure, work collaboratively with others and communicate well with the wider BBC news operation and be the team’s representative and voice at core editorial and project meetings.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
* Excellent writing skills and proven copy editing experience
* Strong editorial judgement with experience handling breaking news on digital platforms and a proven track record of making the right decisions under intense pressure
* A track record of covering the UK or regional news agenda and delivering insightful, high-quality journalism to audiences
* Experience and understanding of the formats, tools, and techniques to plan and produce digital news coverage in both text and video
DESIRED BUT NOT REQUIRED:
* Knowledge of audience data, search data and social media to improve storytelling, reach new audiences and broaden coverage
