Overview of the role:
Reporting into the Lead Systems Engineer, the successful candidate will join a highly focussed and passionate team leading the delivery of electrical / electronic engineering across the business.
The role is within the Group Electrics & Controls Excavator team which has responsibility to ensure that all new JCB Product programmes meet the required technical deliverables against required timing. The role requires technical knowledge, hands-on experience, project delivery process understanding, and the ability to work with diverse teams to ensure delivery in line with product excellence.
Located at the manufacturing site, the successful candidate will be able to touch and feel the product to ensure the design level requirements are appropriately translated into machine operation and function.
The role will be responsible for delivering the design, development and deployment of new electrical & electronic systems into the Excavator product range.
Working as part of the systems engineering team, you will support the definition, interpretation and development of the customer and system level requirements.
This role will involve architecture design across a range of products with rationalisation and commonality one of the main objectives, whilst pushing new technologies and feature content to enhance and satisfy the customer requirements.
As a Senior Engineer in systems design and integration you will provide technical support to the delivery of the system design. You will evaluate multiple system designs to arrive at a harmonised solution that meets the required project attributes. Additionally you will be responsible for preparing the system level and module level requirements specifications in conjunction with developing functional designs to demonstrate how the customer requirements will be satisfied through the proposed design.
Your Responsibilities:
· General Duties:
o Translate the ‘voice of the customer’ (internal and external) into a list of clear concise requirements and deliverables.
o Selection of correct hardware platform(s) to deliver the technical solution, considering environmental and cost targets.
o Thrive in a fast agile environment, developing prototype solutions to validate proof of concept ideas.
o Creation of software architecture to satisfy delivery of the requirements.
o Co-ordination of 3rd party support vendors with the creation of requirements and corresponding software architectures.
o Ensuring robust and reliable ECU communication protocols are followed in line with industry best practice (SAE J1939, Ethernet).
o Be able to read electronic schematic diagrams and their electrical wiring diagram counterpart.
o Ensure design for manufacture is considered, both relating to build of the programming and parameter configuration of selected solution.
o Have a keen interest in monitoring the health and status of the system, via on board diagnostic protocols or over the air communications.
o Work inline with industry standard development techniques ie V Model and software development processes.
o Consider the implications of writing / modelling software related to the delivery of functional safety solutions and security (cyber/digital resilience).
o Prepare test plans to enable successful and robust software validation and verification.
o Sound record keeping techniques, of all designs, revisions and related updates.
o Drive re-use of components and approaches.
o Support of cause and effect analysis – risk assessments, FMEA, 8D, Ishikawa/fishbone.
· Qualifications and Experience:
o Willing to understand how things work, or how they can be improved.
o Strong desire to learn from working on differing system architectures and coding techniques.
o Familiar with different requirements capturing tools
o Knowledge of different CAN bus protocols ie CANOpen, J1939, ISO14229, ISO14230
o Working knowledge of Software development techniques (V Model and functional safety)
o Awareness of security impact to achieve secure and resilient systems (hardware and software)
o Experience in the completion of different VnV techniques White/Grey/Black box testing
o Knowledge / experience of hardware in the loop (HIL) testing – functional test, fault insertion testing
o Knowledge / experience of system integration testing at a vehicle level – does the solution power up, communicate, operate and shut down as intended?
o Comfortable working with various electronic lab tools ie Spectrum analyser, Oscilloscope, Signal Generators, DC power supplies
o Comfortable working with serial tools, bluetooth and over the air diagnostics
o A good understanding of design verification processes (DVPSOR)
o An ability to read and digest complex information relating to internal and external procedures and sign-off requirements
o Comfortable supporting and completing cause and effect analysis – Risk Assessments, FMEA, 8D, Ishikawa/fishbone
· Essential:
o Able to convert a list of desirables, into clear concise testable statements (functional requirements)
o Sound base knowledge of electronic and software development
o Sound base knowledge of low level firmware integration ie bootloader through to application layer and parameter configuration
o Familiar with CAN bus protocols
o Happy to use different types of lab equipment to monitor system behaviour ie CAN, frequencies, PWM and basic operation
o Awareness of functional safety and security impact, on software development
o Experience in the use of black box testing techniques
o Experience of validation and verification activities
o Experience taking electronic systems from concept through to delivery.
o Excellent communication and IT skills
· Desired
o Significant experience within Tier 1 or OE sectors (on highway or off highway) within system engineering or software development
o Qualified to HND/Degree level in an electronic/software based technology discipline or equivalent experience.
o Validation and verification co-ordination
o Experience of Project delivery
o Understanding of and adherence to quality systems and processes.
o Understanding of FuSa and Cyber techniques (ISO13849 and ISO21434)
o Co-ordination of tasks with the wider team.
