Mechanical Fitter – Freight Locomotive Specialist
Location: Worksop Depot, Nottinghamshire
Salary: £44,000 to £48,000 per annum (depending on experience)
Overview
Join our expert mechanical team to maintain and rebuild Class 37, Class 08 and Class 20 Locomotives, along with other mainline units.
You’ll work to high engineering standards within a focused workshop environment, delivering reliable traction for hire and infrastructure services.
We need very in-depth overhaul experience/modification experience, bogies, electrics and fault finding.
Key Responsibilities
* Plan and execute mechanical work on diesel locomotives: engine overhauls, gearbox servicing, bogie maintenance.
* Perform precise assembly, fitting, and adjustment to tight tolerances.
* Diagnose and repair mechanical and hydraulic faults; fit and inspect brake systems, drawgear, and wheelsets.
* Complete maintenance records and ensure compliance with rail safety standards and documentation.
* Support locomotive jacking, lifting, and heavy lifting procedures during overhauls.
* Collaborate with workshop team, including supervision of apprentices and assisting other fitters.
Essential Requirements
* Proven mechanical fitting experience with Freight locomotives or similar mainline diesel locomotives.
* Strong mechanical fault‑finding ability across engine, gearbox, bogie, and brake systems.
* Understanding of rail safety regulations, ROGS, and depot protocols.
* Ability to read engineering drawings and perform precision fitting.
* Flexible, team-oriented, and ready to support depot operations.
