The Kingston GP Federation (Kingston GP Chambers) is recruiting for an experienced full‑time or part‑time phlebotomist on behalf of Canbury and Berrylands surgeries. The successful post‑holder will be expected to work across both sites – Canbury‑Central Kingston and Berrylands‑Surbiton Health Centre.

Canbury and Berrylands are well established GP Practices within Kingston and Surbiton, and part of the COBB primary care network, each rated as "good" by the Care Quality Commission. They offer high‑quality, compassionate health care in a friendly, welcoming setting.


Main duties of the job

Job summary: The successful post‑holder will work under the supervision of the practice nursing team and strictly in accordance with practice and national guidelines and protocols. The Phlebotomist will be responsible for performing venepuncture to obtain blood samples from patients only as the result of a direct referral from a GP or nurse practitioner.

* Assist in and perform routine patient‑care tasks in negotiation with other members of the nursing team and as directed by GPs.
* Ensure the patient is comfortable and relaxed, and confirm their agreement to the collection of a blood sample.
* Collect blood samples in accordance with training and procedures.
* Store samples in appropriate containers.
* Label all samples in an accurate, legible manner to confirm patient identity.
* Check patient identification against the GP/nurse request and confirm with the patient.
* Record collection of the blood sample in the patient record in accordance with practice procedure.
* Dispatch samples to the appropriate laboratories in a timely fashion.
* Report any anomalies to a senior member of staff and notify the GP/nurse of any significant patient issues.
* Liaise with and assist members of the administrative team.

Kingston GP Chambers is a federation of all NHS General Practices within the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames. Founded in 2008, it is led by a Board of Directors who are GP partners in their own practices. We provide community clinics in dermatology, urology, neurology, dementia and diabetes, and offer an extended‑hours service across three hubs. We work closely with other GP federations in Southwest London to deliver high‑quality, innovative primary‑care solutions.

In the course of providing care, patients entrust us with sensitive information. The post‑holder must respect privacy, act appropriately, and only share confidential data with authorised persons in accordance with practice policies.


Health & Safety

* Implement and lead health and safety and infection‑control activities in line with practice policy.
* Maintaining correct specimen process (collection, labelling, handling, storage and transport) and PPE provision.
* Practice good hand hygiene, safe sharps procedure, and keep work areas clean, sterile and free of hazards.
* Identify, report and correct health‑safety hazards and infection hazards promptly.
* Engage in periodic infection‑control training and maintain sterile environments.


Personal / Professional Development

The post‑holder will participate in any training programme implemented by the practice, including an annual individual performance review, maintaining a record of personal and/or professional development, and demonstrating skills and activities to others in similar roles.


Person Specification


Knowledge and skills

* Ability to work within a team.
* Good interpersonal skills.
* Experience using EMIS.


Experience

* Experience working with the general public in a healthcare setting and in a primary‑care environment.


Qualifications

* Excellent communication skills, written and oral.
* Clear, polite telephone manner.
* Competence in Office and Outlook.
* Effective time‑management (planning and organising).
* Ability to work as a team member and autonomously.
* Good interpersonal skills and ability to follow clinical policy and procedure.

Salary: Dependent upon experience.
