Overview FM Assistant (Cleaning). Band 2 - £12.51 per hour (£24,465 per annum pro rata). 10 hours per week. Monday - Friday, 17.00 - 19.00.
To participate in the provision of the in-house FM services to a specified area within the Trust. The FM services comprise cleaning. Sections of this job description may not be relevant to all staff and will be identified where appropriate but are not exhaustive. If you're shortlisted for this role, your interview will take place on 2nd April 2026. You will be working as part of the Facilities Team and are expected to have a flexible approach to your duties. You will be working as a valued member of the Estates & Facilities Management Team. The Estates & Facilities Department is responsible for delivering high quality and cost effective services across Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust. You must be aware of the important part you play in maintaining the environment to an excellent standard. You must also be aware that your work will involve working alongside patients and occasionally interacting with them as you carry out your duties outlined below. Please note you must have right to work in the UK to apply for this position. Due to current Home Office Guidelines, we are unable to sponsor this job role.

Key Responsibilities To ensure that the ward(s) / areas you are assigned to are cleaned in accordance with the Work Schedule for those ward(s) / areas. This includes vacuuming floors; sweeping, scrubbing and mopping; high and low dusting; wiping and polishing surfaces, mirrors, chairs (where applicable), bed frames, bins, sani-bins; cleaning toilets, sinks, baths and showers; cleaning cookers, regeneration ovens, fridges, holding fridges, microwaves and other items in the kitchens; defrosting fridges regularly; restocking consumables such as toilet tissue, hand towels, soap; descaling taps; and bins and replacing bin liners. (Providing they have not been soiled with body fluids)
To work with your supervisor and other interested parties when the work schedule for the area you are assigned to is reviewed to ensure the schedule is manageable and appropriate.
To inform your supervisor if there are problems (e.g., with floor coverings, surfaces) that would affect your ability to clean the areas properly.
To ensure that you use only the correct colour coded mops, cloths, buckets, etc., assigned to those areas, and that these items are properly cleaned and stored or disposed of at the end of your shift to prevent cross infection.
To ensure that all cleaning materials and disposables used are used economically; report to your supervisor if product quality deteriorates or if substitute products are delivered; ensure only Trust-provided chemicals are used as trained.
To use machinery/equipment (e.g., vacuum cleaners, dishwashers, regeneration ovens) safely; report faults; keep equipment clean; replace vacuum bags regularly; use equipment only for its intended task; observe safety signs and circuit breakers as appropriate.
To store all equipment and cleaning materials securely; report if storage is compromised or storeroom is unlocked at the start of shift.
To ensure correct disposal of general or domestic waste, recyclables and clinical waste and to report any instances of improper segregation, storage or disposal.
Food Services: assist with regeneration process of cook-chill meals by taking and recording temperatures, prepare soup, gravy and custard, and ensure temperatures are recorded at the end of regeneration; ensure safe handling of meals served to patients; launder oven gloves and cloths regularly; be responsible for serving and clearing patient meals (where applicable) and for cleaning crockery and cutlery used for patient meals.
Laundry Service: for specified areas, launder and finish patient clothes, duvets, curtains; label patient items; separate dirty/clean items to minimize cross infection; maintain a clean laundry area and complete cleaning checklists; ensure laundry machinery is kept clean and reported for faults.
Portering: deliver and collect items (pharmacy boxes, medical records, clean linen, meals, waste, etc.); obtain signatures where appropriate; assist with site duties, including fire safety, weather-related tasks, and ad-hoc transporting of patients or equipment; keep public areas tidy; assist with marshaling access for emergency services; ensure compliance with waste management and storage; assist with vehicle access and site upkeep.
