Overview
At Jacobs, we're challenging today to reinvent tomorrow by solving the world's most critical problems for thriving cities, resilient environments, mission‑critical outcomes, operational advancement, scientific discovery and cutting‑edge manufacturing, turning abstract ideas into realities that transform the world for good.
Your impact: At Jacobs, we’re building the future of transport—safer streets, smarter networks and better‑connected communities.
Role Summary
As part of our Cities & Places business, we’re looking for a Senior / Principal Traffic Engineer to join our growing Transport Planning and Engineering team, sitting within a Midlands group (Birmingham) of more than 40 transport planners and engineers who work seamlessly across planning, design and road safety.
In this role, you’ll be right at the heart of shaping technically robust, buildable and future‑focused transport solutions. The team sits at the interface of transport planning and highway design, allowing you to turn strategic transport objectives into real‑world, safe and compliant engineering outcomes. From early concept development to detailed design, you’ll play a leading role in delivering transport strategies, masterplans, Transport Assessments and Business Cases, ensuring safety and performance are considered at every stage.
You’ll work with a broad portfolio of clients across the UK, including Local Authorities, National Highways and Sub‑National Transport Bodies, guiding multidisciplinary teams and helping ensure that planning recommendations translate meaningfully into junction layouts, network management proposals, active travel improvements, and both temporary and permanent traffic management solutions.
Your work will support every phase of a project’s lifecycle—from early feasibility and option selection right through to Road Safety Audits and implementation on the ground.
As a Senior / Principal Traffic Engineer, you’ll provide strong technical leadership and help shape the next generation of engineers and planners. You’ll mentor junior colleagues, set direction on project tasks and champion high‑quality, safe and innovative design.
