Applications are invited for a skilled CNC machinist / Mechanical Workshop Technician vacancy within the University of Oxford's Department of Physics. The post is full‑time and permanent.
Overview
The successful candidate will join the busy Mechanical Engineering Group within one of the largest departments in the University, giving the opportunity to work on and contribute to world‑leading high‑profile scientific projects.
Key Responsibilities
* Manufacture high‑precision components for experimental equipment using CNC and manual machine tools.
* Fit and assemble components, sub‑assemblies, and complete instruments, ensuring accuracy and finish standards.
* Accurately interpret engineering drawings, identify inconsistencies, and liaise effectively with academic, research, and design engineers.
* Operate CNC and conventional workshop machinery safely and efficiently, contributing to development and maintenance of experimental systems.
* Problem‑solve independently and provide constructive support when required.
* Assist with installation, modification, or maintenance of research apparatus at sites within the UK or overseas on occasion.
Qualifications
* Completed a recognised apprenticeship and hold a BTEC Higher National Certificate/Diploma in Mechanical or Production Engineering or an equivalent qualification.
* Lower qualifications considered if offset by significantly greater experience.
* Previous experience in high technology and scientific research is desirable.
* Experience manufacturing components using CNC and standard machines; Heidenhain knowledge and CAD/CAM experience desirable.
* Experience with Carbon Fibre or composite materials (lay‑up, laminating, trimming, finishing) highly advantageous.
