About the role
The role will provide technical design input into proposing and detailing design solutions for upcoming pavement renewal schemes across the Connect Plus Services (M25) network. There is a wide range of pavement engineering challenges across the M25, and the need for safe, efficient and cost‑effective design solutions is fundamental to maintaining the operation and performance of one of the UK’s busiest and most critical road networks.
The role will provide opportunities for the individual to take technical ownership of assigned pavement schemes, leading and directing design development from concept through to detailed design. The role will also provide the opportunity to follow through the practical construction onsite across the M25 network. The Senior Pavement Engineer will be expected to lead engineering reviews with stakeholders and ensure that pavement designs are based around safe and efficient construction processes.
The role will require effective design coordination, reviewing the documentation produced by Framework Consultants and assisting in managing design workload in line with delivery priorities, programme constraints and road space booking requirements. It will require close working relationships with Asset engineers, Project Managers and designers responsible for relevant assets.
The role will focus on delivering cost effective pavement design solutions that maintain or improve the M25 highways asset to the agreed standards and stakeholder requirements. Deliver the outcomes agreed with the National Highways and Connect Plus DBFO Co. to programme and budget, and to meet CPS quality standards. Coordinate with Design, Asset and PM teams and organisations (NH SES).
What you’ll be doing
* Undertake optioneering and feasibility assessments of pavement design solutions in the value management workshops, considering whole-life cost, performance, sustainability and buildability.
* Take a lead role in pavement investigations, including preparing investigation scopes, reviewing and interpreting data, and developing appropriate design solutions based on findings.
* Work closely with Project Managers to lead the internal Gateway reviews during the design phase to ensure that they are timely and appropriate sign off is achieved at each Gateway.
* Check and review design deliverables, including drawings, CDM documents, specifications, produced by internal and external designers to ensure that designs are complete and compliant, and ensure they meet the brief and agreed outcomes, prior to submission to National Highways through the Review Process.
* Identify and manage Departures from Standards, including early identification of non-compliances and preparation, coordination and submission of Departure applications in line with client procedures and agreed design programmes.
* Technically accountable for the design solutions, engaging with engineering reviews to drive innovative solutions that can be safely installed and are best for the asset need.
* Manage and coordinate internal and external design resources to achieve delivery of design outputs to agreed programme and budget.
* Report to the Design Lead, Principal Engineer and Project Manager on the performance against budget and programme.
