About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Electrical & Instrumentation Design Engineer to join our growing engineering design team, based in Swansea, with hybrid working available.
This role is suited to an engineer with a strong instrumentation background, experienced in the specification and delivery of field instrumentation for use in safety-critical and regulated environments. You will support projects from tender and FEED through to detailed design and commissioning, working across Top Tier COMAH, chemical, manufacturing and utilities sites throughout the UK.
You will be responsible for delivering high-quality instrumentation design packages, ensuring compliance with statutory, client, and industry standards. The role suits someone who can take technical ownership of work packages, check and approve design outputs, and engage effectively with clients and equipment suppliers.
We also offer access to our dedicated industrial electrical training facility and in-house CompEx training services to support your ongoing professional development.
Key Responsibilities
* Specify and select field instrumentation for flow, pressure, temperature, level and analytical measurement.
* Prepare and check instrument datasheets, requisitions and schedules.
* Provide technical input to tenders, feasibility studies and front-end engineering.
* Carry out hazardous area equipment selection and intrinsic safety loop verification in accordance with area classification drawings, ATEX certification and BS EN 60079.
* Prepare and review instrumentation and EC&I design documentation from P&IDs, layouts, and client specifications.
* Produce and check design deliverables, including:
* Loop diagrams and DSDs
* Instrument hook-ups and installation details
* Cable, I/O, and termination schedules
* Maintain instrument indexes, I/O lists, and cable schedules.
* Perform and review IS calculations, power calculations and electrical assessments.
* Review and comment on vendor documentation.
* Liaise with clients, contractors, and suppliers throughout project delivery.
* Support site surveys, construction activities and commissioning.
* Contribute to the development of company instrumentation standards and design practices.
About You
* Proven experience in instrumentation design within process, chemical, energy or utilities environments.
* Strong practical knowledge of field instrumentation and hazardous area installations.
* Experience producing and checking loop diagrams, datasheets and installation drawings.
* Comfortable supporting tendering and front-end engineering.
* Solid working knowledge of DSEAR, ATEX, IEC 60079 and relevant UK standards.
* Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
* Strong organisational and communication skills.
* CompEx certification, or willingness to obtain (supported in-house), is desirable.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential
* HNC / HND in Electrical, Control, or Instrumentation Engineering (or equivalent).
* Minimum 5 years' experience in C&I / instrumentation design within industrial or process sectors.
* Proficient in AutoCAD and capable of producing detailed design deliverables.
* Good understanding of instrumentation systems and basic control principles.
* Excellent organisational and communication skills.
* Full UK driving licence.
Desirable
* Apprentice-trained in an instrumentation discipline.
* Experience producing full design dossiers (loop diagrams, cable schedules, IS calculations, hook-ups, datasheets).
* Experience in control panel design, including layouts and wiring schematics.
* CompEx-certified or experienced in hazardous area design.
* Familiarity with the 18th Edition IET Wiring Regulations.
