An established and respected business within the custom build residential sector is seeking an experienced Design Manager to lead its in-house design team.
With decades of expertise in delivering high-quality, bespoke timber frame homes, this organisation specialises in efficient, sustainable construction and prides itself on technical excellence and customer-focused design.
This is an exciting opportunity for a talented design professional with proven leadership experience to play a key role in delivering outstanding residential projects from concept through to manufacture.
The Role
As Design Manager, you will oversee the full design process for bespoke residential homes and small-scale developments, ensuring projects are delivered accurately, on time, and to the highest quality standards.
You will lead a small team of Designers and Technicians, working closely with Project Managers, Engineers, and internal manufacturing and construction teams to translate client visions into thoughtful, buildable solutions.
This is a full-time, office-based position in East Grinstead.
Key Responsibilities
1. Lead and manage a team of Designers and Technicians
2. Oversee production of drawings from concept and planning through to Building Control and Technical Construction stages
3. Manage team workload to ensure deadlines are achieved without compromising quality
4. Collaborate with Project Managers and engage with clients to develop practical, well-considered designs
5. Coordinate with internal manufacturing and construction departments
6. Review and approve technical drawings for accuracy and regulatory compliance
7. Support and mentor team members to encourage professional development
8. Manage drawing storage, filing, and documentation control processes
About You
Qualifications & Technical Skills
9. RIBA qualification or equivalent architectural qualification
10. Proficiency in AutoCAD
11. Working knowledge of SketchUp, Enscape and Photoshop
Experience
12. Proven experience managing and leading a design team
13. Strong portfolio demonstrating creative and technical expertise
14. In-depth knowledge of UK planning policy and building regulations
15. Understanding of structural design principles, particularly timber frame construction
16. Knowledge of CDM regulations and associated responsibilities
17. Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
Desirable
18. Experience using AI and digital tools within architectural workflows
19. Knowledge of sustainable design and energy-efficient construction practices
