Purpose of the role
Colas is currently delivering the eight-year Maintenance & Response contract for National Highways Area 9, covering around 2,300 miles of the Strategic Road Network. This critical transport hub serves major motorway interchanges and supports the new HS2 network, enabling millions of journeys across the UK.
We’re are looking for a Dispatcher with practical highways experience to join our team in Quinton, B32 1EF to support with a mix of days and night shift work. Reporting to the Incident Response Manager, you will play a key role in planning, managing, and coordinating routine and reactive maintenance works across Area 9, ensuring smooth operations and compliance with safety and quality standards.
Main Responsibilities
As a Dispatcher, you will coordinate and monitor multi-discipline localised area programmes in line with client service agreements and commercial targets. You will support commercial planning strategies while effectively communicating with key stakeholders. Managing the day-to-day operations of routine and reactive maintenance teams, you will ensure productivity and resource utilisation are maximised. Responding promptly to high-level incidents and emergency situations, you will collaborate closely with the National Highways Road Space Team, contractors, local authorities, and police. Reviewing traffic management proposals to minimise delays and maintain safety will be an important part of your role, alongside conducting risk assessments and safety checks. You will also be responsible for maintaining accurate programme records, supporting process improvements, and promoting the highest standards of Health, Safety, Environmental & Assurance compliance. Fostering a positive team culture and encouraging collaboration across disciplines will help ensure project success.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have at least two years’ experience in highways maintenance operations or a related field, with strong knowledge of traffic management and highways legislation, including the Road Traffic Act. You will have practical experience working under tight deadlines and handling emergency responses effectively. Excellent communication skills are essential, enabling you to engage confidently with stakeholders at all levels. You should be highly organised, with strong attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities effectively. A good ability to analyse workloads, allocate resources, and supervise staffing, plant, and materials to maximise productivity will be critical. Flexibility to adapt to workload fluctuations, proficiency with Microsoft Office, and general project management knowledge are also important. SMSTS certification and a full driving licence would be advantageous.

A base rate salary of £30,750. Additonal shift allowances paid for days, nights and mix shifts.
