Freshwater Ecologist (Analysis and Reporting team) – 32097
Are you passionate about protecting and understanding aquatic ecosystems? The Thames Area Analysis and Reporting Team is looking for dedicated Freshwater Ecologists to join our mission in delivering essential ecological monitoring programs from our labs and offices in Wallingford.
Core responsibilities include aquatic ecological surveying, species identification, and data analysis to assess environmental change. You will also support pollution, drought and flooding incident responses, and have opportunities to build expertise through specialist training.
* Field work: undertaking ecological field surveys of aquatic plants, macroinvertebrates, algae, fish, freshwater habitat and water quality.
* Driving and boat use, both parts of this exciting role.
* In laboratories, analyse samples of aquatic macroinvertebrates to mixed taxon level (including some to species) and identify algae.
* From offices, monitor, record and interpret data sets and write compelling reports to inform and influence partners, protecting the environment through advice, regulation and enforcement.
* Support pollution, drought and flooding incident response.
* Work in flexible patterns, including working from home when appropriate, and contribute to a safe, fair and empowering culture.
Qualifications and experience required:
* Ecological technical degree or relevant freshwater ecology experience, including species identification, microscopy, dichotomous keys, and field survey methodologies for macroinvertebrates, plants, fish, and habitats.
* Training provided for accreditation in river habitat survey, macroinvertebrate, and plant identification.
* Self‑development, initiative, organization, adaptability, teamwork and incident response skills.
* Specific training in water safety and a valid full UK driving licence.
