Newcastle Law School seeks to appoint a Senior Lecturer/Reader in Environmental Law who will help embed our values: Challenge, Social Justice, Compassion, Wellbeing, Excellence, Responsibility, and Respect.
We are looking for a passionate researcher and educator in Environmental Law, with research engaging socially relevant questions such as sustainability, climate change, and climate justice, capable of attracting funding or delivering real‑world impact. A willingness to collaborate across legal fields, other disciplines, and engage with industry and external partners is desirable.
The successful candidate will contribute to teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level, and will be expected to deliver at least one foundational legal knowledge subject.
Key Accountabilities
Teaching & Learning
* Provide high‑quality, research‑led teaching activity.
* Supervise dissertation students at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
* Mentor and support students as personal tutor.
* Set and mark assessment of modules in accordance with university standards and utilise online and digitised curricula.
* Contribute to curriculum and programme development as required.
Research
* Conduct research demonstrating international standards of excellence (REF 3* & 4*).
* Contribute to the research profile by publishing high‑quality outputs and engaging with the Non/Human Law research group and relevant Newcastle University Centres of Research Excellence (NUCoREs).
* Pursue external funding commensurate with experience.
* Demonstrate impact by developing research‑based solutions and engaging with external stakeholders.
* Supervise PGR (postgraduate research) students.
Other
* Operate as an active and collegial citizen in the Newcastle Law School community.
* Commit to diversity, equity and inclusion and cultivate a positive research and learning culture.
* Undertake administrative tasks supporting teaching, research, engagement or student experience.
* Take responsibility for a defined citizenship or leadership role.
* Contribute to wider work of the School, Faculty and University via project teams, working groups and committees.
* Develop sustained relationships with internal colleagues and external partners.
* Provide academic leadership to colleagues and students as a senior colleague.
* Responsibility for design, development, implementation and/or administration of study programmes.
* Supervise and attract PGR students.
In Addition, for Appointment at Reader
* Engage with the external research funding environment (UKRI and international).
* Proactively advance and maximise the external impact of research.
* Collaborate with individuals, partner organisations and non‑HEIs.
* Take a senior role in the school and contribute to strategic development.
* Provide leadership in attracting and supervising postgraduate research students.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience
Senior Lecturer
* Evidence of sustained teaching experience in environmental law and foundational legal knowledge subjects.
* Outstanding educational experience rooted in strong disciplinary knowledge that engages students.
* Ability to deliver research‑led teaching and use technology to enhance learning.
* Experience designing and delivering high‑quality teaching materials and learning activities.
* Sustained national and international research profile with world‑leading publications.
* Experience developing and securing grant capture (desirable).
* Track record of engaging external stakeholders and generating real‑world impact (desirable).
* Experience attracting and supervising PGR students (desirable).
* Supervision of undergraduate and taught postgraduate research projects.
* Active academic citizenship—administrative roles supporting teaching, research, engagement or student experience.
* Leadership of programme‑level design of learning, teaching and assessment strategies.
* Strong organisational and leadership skills for management in the School.
* Personal resilience and ability to manage conflicting priorities.
Reader (in addition to Senior Lecturer criteria)
* Experience in developing and delivering research‑led teaching programmes.
* Successful recruitment and supervision of postgraduate research students.
* Engagement with external research funding and successful grant capture.
* Experience in cross‑disciplinary research projects or educational programmes (desirable).
* Track record of research generating real‑world impact (desirable).
* Inspirational leadership across teaching and research suitable for career stage.
* Mentoring and supporting colleagues across career stages.
* Ability to develop sustained relationships with internal and external colleagues and international partners.
Qualifications
Essential
* Good Honours degree in a relevant subject.
* PhD in a relevant subject.
* Relevant Professional Body Membership (desirable).
* HE teaching qualification (or equivalent experience).
