Band 7 Haemato-oncology Physiotherapist, Full time Sutton, Permanent

Step into a rewarding career at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, where you’ll play a pivotal role in shaping the future of haematology physiotherapy on our Sutton site. We are looking for an enthusiastic physiotherapist with oncology experience and an interest in haematology. You will work with a diverse group of patients with haematological cancers mainly inpatients, including the Teenage Young Adult unit, but also some clinics and outpatients. As a leader, you’ll guide and support a talented team of Band 5 and 6 physiotherapists, coordinating the inpatient service at our Sutton site. You’ll be part of a forward-thinking, supportive environment, with access to regular supervision, in-service training, and the guidance of experienced senior colleagues—empowering you to grow, innovate, and thrive in your physiotherapy career.


Main duties of the job

Cancer care is a rapidly developing and relatively new area of expertise within physiotherapy.

The Band 7 Physiotherapist takes a lead role, alongside Band 8a Physiotherapists, to provide a high quality; evidence-based physiotherapy service for patients referred to the Haematology service.

The post holder will plan, coordinate, deliver and evaluate the physiotherapy service for the Haematology service- this covers 28 beds on 2 wards, the Ambulatory chemotherapy day unit and outpatients as appropriate. The post holder also line manages a band 6 physiotherapist on the Teenage and Young Adult (TYA) unit and other inpatient rotational band 6s and provides leadership oversight of the inpatient service at Sutton.

* Undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner.
* Be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own work, including the management of patients and support Band 5/6 physiotherapists and Therapy assistants to do similarly.
* Manage clinical risk within own patient caseload
* Continue to develop the physiotherapy service for patients with haematological cancers This necessitates the acquisition and application of specific physiotherapy and oncology skills. These advanced skills will impact on the advanced assessment and treatment of this patient group and will enable a comprehensive approach to holistic care.


Person specification


Education/Qualifications

* Diploma/degree level qualification in physiotherapy
* Membership of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy or have alternative indemnity arrangements
* HCPC Registered Physiotherapist
* Evidence of on-going personal/professional development through maintenance of CPD portfolio


Experience

* Significant clinical experience
* Demonstrable knowledge in core physiotherapy skills including respiratory, neurology, orthopaedics, surgical, medical and rehabilitation
* Evidence of skill in provision of a physiotherapy service to patients with haemato-oncology diagnoses
* Knowledge/Experience in the treatment of patients with cancer
* Ability to teach skills/knowledge to others in both formal and informal environments
* Supervision and line management experience
* Experience of service development


Skills Abilities/knowledge

* Confident to take the lead and articulate ideas and concerns
* Advanced communication skills with particular ability to work with complex/sensitive situations with patients, carers, physiotherapy colleagues and the wider MDT
* Membership of a clinical interest group in physiotherapy

Flu Vaccination – What We Expect of our Staff

At The Royal Marsden we have an immune compromised patient population who we must protect as much as we can against the flu virus. Each year, seasonal flu affects thousands of people in the UK. Occurring mainly in winter, it is an infectious respiratory disease capable of producing symptoms ranging from those similar to a common cold, through to very severe or even fatal disease.

The wellbeing of our staff and patients is of the upmost importance to us, and it is the expectation of The Royal Marsden that all patient-facing staff have an annual flu vaccination, provided free of charge by the Trust.
