The Head of Field Service – BESS will be responsible for leading and overseeing all pre- and post-installation activities, from system installation through to ongoing operations and maintenance (O&M), across a portfolio of Battery Energy Storage System assets. This role ensures the effective delivery of service and maintenance contracts, including commissioning, preventative maintenance, and reactive fault response, while driving high standards of performance, safety, and customer satisfaction. The position also involves recruiting, training, mentoring, and managing a regional or national team of Field Service Engineers and Technicians, providing both strategic leadership and hands-on technical support across client sites throughout the UK.
The Head of Field Service will report to the Operations Director and work closely with the Heads of Engineering, Software, Procurement, and Programme Management, as well as key internal stakeholders and external partners, to ensure aligned delivery.
Key Responsibilities
• Develop and implement the overall Field Service strategy, including standards for preventative maintenance (PM), corrective maintenance (CM), troubleshooting, and commissioning support.
• Establish and continuously improve all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), maintenance procedures, and workflow processes for field service activities.
• Take ultimate responsibility for the long-term operational performance, reliability, and maximum energy output/availability of all BESS assets under service contracts.
• Oversee the management of spare parts and logistics across all service locations to ensure rapid response to outages.
• Act as the primary technical interface and escalation point for key customers regarding service delivery, operational performance, and contract fulfilment (especially LTSAs).
• Ensure all contractual obligations under LTSAs are met, including performance guarantees (availability, capacity), reporting requirements, and outage scheduling.
• Manage and oversee third-party contractors and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) providing specialised maintenance or repair services, ensuring their work meets company standards.
• Prepare and present regular, comprehensive service and performance reports for internal executive management and external clients.

Qualifications & Experience
Essential
• Degree or HND in Electrical Engineering or related field.
• One or more of the following:
* Electrical inspection and testing certification (e.g., 18th Edition, C&G 2391)
* Degree or HND in Electrical Engineering or related field.
* Formal training and qualification as an electrician
• Minimum 3 years of experience in field service or electrical systems maintenance.
• Strong understanding of hybrid power systems, inverters, and energy storage technologies. • Competent with knowledge on electrical characteristics:
* AC / DC Networks • Power Factor
* kVA / kW
* Harmonics
Proficient in reading electrical schematics and using diagnostic tools.
• Familiarity with PLCs, SCADA systems, and remote monitoring platforms is a plus.
• Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel extensively.
Desirable Skills
• Experience with PLCs, SCADA, or remote monitoring systems.
• Familiarity with renewable energy systems and grid-tied configurations.
