The University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust is seeking to appoint 2 x Locum Fixed Term Consultants in Plastic Surgery. These posts are for Locum Consultant Plastic Surgeons with an interest in microsurgery, breast reconstruction, skin cancer and hand trauma. The positions are 12‑month fixed‑term contracts within the Musculoskeletal & Specialist Surgery Clinical Management Group, with services based primarily at Leicester Royal Infirmary, Northampton General Hospital & Kettering General Hospital, and on‑call provision at Leicester Royal Infirmary.
Applicants should have experience and expertise in microsurgery, breast reconstruction, skin cancer management (including sentinel lymph node biopsy) and hand trauma. Fellowship training in one or more of these areas is highly desirable.
Main duties of the job
The appointees will work alongside Consultant Plastic Surgeons and the wider team to provide comprehensive and coordinated Plastic Surgery services across UHL & UHN.
Key responsibilities include:
* Providing highest quality patient care and continuous improvement.
* Preventing, diagnosing and treating illness and ensuring proper functioning of the department.
* Covering colleagues’ annual leave and authorised absences where possible.
* Participating in service development and business planning in collaboration with other Consultants, management, CMG, local GPs and commissioners.
* Supervising junior medical staff and adhering to employment and human resource policies.
* Carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties, contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education.
* Responding promptly to legitimate requests from Trust officers, including investigations into incidents or complaints.
* Engaging in professional continuing medical education; study leave is provided.
Job responsibilities
Maintain continuing professional development (CPD) to revalidate, attend annual appraisal and keep statutory & mandatory training up to date.
Complete Trust Corporate and Directorate induction and competency programmes.
Provide support for emergency admissions or day attenders during office hours.
Act as a point of escalation for junior doctors requiring senior advice.
Undertake Consultant Plastic Surgery services through outpatient clinics, procedure lists, theatre lists, day case and inpatient care, including services at UHL community sites and St Peters Health Centre.
Work flexibly with other consultant surgeons to maximise utilisation of outpatient and inpatient lists.
On‑call commitment ranges from 1:6 to 1:8, including weekends and bank holidays.
Person Specification
Training & Qualifications
* MB BS or equivalent.
* Full GMC registration with licence to practice.
* FRCS (PLAST) or equivalent.
Experience / Clinical Skills
* Senior Registrar experience or equivalent in Plastic Surgery.
* Awareness of constraints, risks & potential complications of management.
* Clinical knowledge & expertise.
* Microsurgery and Breast reconstruction experience.
Communication and relationship skills
* Demonstrable written and spoken communication skills.
* Empathetic and sensitive approach.
Teaching
* Experience and commitment to teaching undergraduate & postgraduate students.
* Enthusiastic and ability to inspire others.
* Willingness to develop new teaching approaches.
Research & Audit
* Understanding of research principles and scientific method.
* Ability to appraise research critically.
* Understanding of audit principles.
* Evidence of personal audit of own surgical outcomes.
* Evidence of recent research & development activity.

* Research publications in nationally and internationally peer‑reviewed journals.
