We are very excited to offer this opportunity for a dynamic and enthusiastic individual to lead on the role of the Trauma coordinator post for the trauma and Orthopaedic department.

This is a great opportunity to work alongside the on-call medical team as well as nurse practitioners. spinal care injury specialist coordinator and revision knee clinical specialist and regional network coordinator.We are looking for an experience nurse that fulfills the job requirement or is interested in establishing a new role in the department.

This is an exciting and progressive department which is continuously adapting to meet and enhance the care provided to our patients and we would welcome any applicants who would relish leading the team and continue taking the department forward.

The successful candidate will deliver excellent care to patients, by prioritising trauma lists and assisting in effectively managing orthopaedic and trauma beds in conjunction with the emergency department, nurses in charge of ward areas and the patient flow team.Working with clinical colleagues they will ensure clinically effective scheduling of surgery for trauma patients and provide the necessary support to clinical colleagues to reduce cancelled operations. Ensuring trauma patients are prepared and ready for surgery, allocated to an appropriate list and effectively communicated with regarding their plan of care.


Main duties of the job

Co-ordinating and developing ambulatory trauma pathways to optimise patients that can be managed on as ambulatory trauma via day-case and short in-patient stays

Liaising with the surgical bed manager, Day Procedure Unit, Trauma Ward, Paediatric Ward and Same Day Admission Unit regarding up-coming admissions and optimising capacity.

Liaise with other hospitals regarding transfers in for specialist trauma surgery, help co-ordinate the transfer and ensure that there is a named consultant documented from the referring hospital to aid repatriation back when the patient is read

Booking high dependency, critical care and extended recovery beds for high anaesthetic risk patients and liaising with the anaesthetic team regarding this.

Assisting in checking that patients are consented, correct bloods and screening completed and reviewed, radiographs completed and reviewed, EPMA charts completed, Respect form completed and any IP+C screening completed prior to surgery and results recorded on the Trauma list.

Safely discharge trauma patients who can go home prior to surgery, utilising available services such as hospital at home and home intravenous therapy teams.

Support the booking of follow up appointments for patients and communicating this to the patient.

Support the booking of bloods and radiographs within the local protocol and ensuring that these are reviewed by an appropriate clinician.

Job responsibilities

* Communicates highly sensitive, confidential information concerning patients requiring empathy, persuasion and reassurance. Some patients may have special needs; patients may be hostile or antagonistic.
* Know and work to relevant local and Trust polices and guidelines relevant to the role.
* Keep accurate patient and departmental records in paper and electronic format.
* Safely discharge trauma patients who can go home prior to surgery, utilising available services such as hospital at home and home intravenous therapy teams.

* Liaising with surgeons, operational management, anaesthetists, and administration teams to allocate specialist trauma to appropriate up-coming specialist theatre lists.
* Liaising with the Anaesthetic team to ensure high risk patients receive an early anaesthetic review prior to surgery.
* Booking high dependency, critical care and extended recovery beds for high anaesthetic risk patients and liaising with the anaesthetic team regarding this.

Qualifications

* Registered professional on the appropriate part of the register


Experience

* Significant experience of trauma and orthopaedic care
* Experience of change management
