Duties and Responsibilities:
The specific duties of an Overhead Crane Engineer can vary depending on their area of focus, which may be mechanical, electrical engineering. Their role is to ensure that all lifting operations are conducted safely, efficiently, and in compliance with industry standards and regulations.
Maintenance and Repair:
- Perform routine and preventative maintenance on various types of overhead cranes and hoists.
- Conduct inspections and testing to certify lifting equipment in accordance with legal standards, such as LOLER and PUWER in the UK.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot faults to perform both reactive and planned repairs, often involving electrical systems, including PLCs, and mechanical components.
Installation and Commissioning:
* - Oversee and assist with the installation of new cranes and lifting equipment.
* - Commission newly installed equipment and perform tests to ensure it operates correctly and safely.
* - Carry out refurbishment and modernisation projects on existing equipment.
Safety and Compliance:
* - Create risk assessments and method statements for onsite activities.
* - Ensure strict adherence to health and safety procedures, regulations, and company policies.
* - Provide technical advice and guidance on crane operations and regulations to internal teams and clients.
Requirements and skills
* Qualifications: Most positions require a formal qualification, such as an NVQ Level 3, HNC, or HND in mechanical or electrical engineering. Experience and relevant certifications from a body like the Lifting Equipment Engineers Association (LEEA) are also essential.
* Experience: A strong background in maintenance, installation, or service within an industrial or heavy plant environment is required.
* Skills: Key skills include strong technical knowledge of mechanics, hydraulics, and electrical systems, excellent problem-solving abilities, and a high degree of safety awareness. Good communication and customer service skills are also important.
* The day-to-day work can be varied and often involves travel to different customer sites to service and inspect their equipment.
