Job Description: Project Curator - Ceramics
Do you want to make your mark as a curator?
In this exciting new role, you’ll lead the reinterpretation of a whole museum dedicated to our world-class ceramic collection. We are looking for an experienced museum professional with a passion for working with our communities to make this special collection a lasting source of inspiration.
A bit about you
You will have professional experience in developing and delivering museum collection displays, ideally working with ceramics or decorative arts. Your professional experience helps you ensure that behind the scenes collections management meets Accreditation standards while working with the project team on creating inspiring and enjoyable content for our target audiences.
You will lead a team of volunteers to support project delivery. Your academic training ensures that you can conduct and oversee high-quality research required to tell the most engaging stories, and you have first-hand experience translating research results into accessible scripts.
About the project
In 2025, we embark on the delivery phase of our £2.5m refurbishment of the Allen Gallery in Alton – home of the Hampshire County Council ceramics collections. It is one of the largest and most important in Britain outside London.
Unlike most other major collections, the Hampshire collection does not focus on a single factory or locality, rather it has been built-up through a carefully targeted acquisition programme to provide a representative collection of historic ceramics from the 17 th century to the present day. It is particularly strong in English delftware. For more details on the 3,000 object strong collections, visit our online catalogue here .
