Overview
The Paediatric Department at Ashford and St. Peters Hospital are looking for an organised, focused, enthusiastic Facilities Assistant to work as part of the team. The Facilities Assistant will work closely with the Estates and Facilities Division to ensure that the ward is clean, safe and comfortable. The Paediatric team care for patients aged from birth up to 18 years in a variety of settings and the Facilities Assistant is a vital part of the team whose main responsibilities include monitoring stock levels, ensuring medical equipment is serviced in line with Trust policies and guidelines, monitoring the maintenance of the units and supporting the domestic team.
The post is designed to help maintain a high standard of care by being part of a Paediatric team providing a safe and suitable environment for children, young people and their families/carers. The Facilities Assistant must be computer literate and work closely with contractors and support service departments, monitoring quality standards, reporting deficiencies and taking appropriate action.
Key responsibilities
* To be responsible for the co-ordination of services provided by Estates and Facilities Division in each of the Paediatric units, ensuring a clean, safe and comfortable environment.
* Deliver and co-ordinate services in accordance with the Trust policy and ward requirements, including stock monitoring and ordering, domestics and linen, maintenance and management of medical devices.
* Monitor stock levels, ensure the medical equipment is serviced in line with policies and guidelines, and support the domestic team.
* Maintain the appearance and behaviour expected of a member of the clinical team and understand the professional roles of others.
* Work with contractors and support service departments; monitor quality standards, report deficiencies and take appropriate action.
* Maintain computer literacy as required.
Paediatric Specific
* Monitor and maintain daily stock levels of the treatment and drug room; daily checklist to be checked and signed.
* Ensure overall responsibility of parents’ accommodation including bed making, cleanliness of kitchens, stock of clean drinking cups with lids, fresh milk, tea and coffee, fridge hygiene and food labelling, microwave cleaning, sluice and linen management, and commode cleaning.
* Maintain culture jugs and cups, stock the store and milk kitchen, and ensure stock rotation and top-ups (e.g., pathology and stores).
* Keep the linen cupboard tidy; floor clean and polythene removed; maintain parents information board and staff photo board.
* Respond to security buzzer and telephone as required; assist in maintaining the process of medical records after discharge in the absence of ward clerk.
* Assist the nurse in charge with infection control audit requirements and mattress audits.
Job duties (relevant areas)
* To remain up to date with changing practices and participate in training and development opportunities.
* To maintain appearance and behaviour in keeping with a member of the clinical team and cooperate with the professional roles of others.
* Attend ward/department staff meetings and mandatory training as required.
* Participate in the ward/department appraisal process as an appraisee and work independently within policies and local guidelines.
* Daily communications with Ward Manager/Nurse in Charge; regular communications with Estates, Facilities, Domestic, and Medical Devices teams.
* General responsibilities: monitor levels of stock and non-stock supplies; order stock on Oracle; liaise with ward manager regarding changes or new supplies; keep accurate records of orders and tracking for 2 years; chase outstanding orders; unpack and store supplies; ensure stores and medical devices rooms are orderly; ensure medical devices are serviced, audited and clean; manage supply enquiries and liaise with suppliers; resolve delivery issues; maintain good links with procurement; be point of contact for medical devices on the unit; maintain asset registers; ensure devices are serviced and maintained; liaise with reps and EBME; support the department with other duties as required.
* Paediatric specific duties: maintain daily stock levels in treatment and drug room; ensure daily checklists are completed; manage parents’ accommodation duties and related housekeeping tasks; maintain equipment and records; ensure infection control and ward environment requirements are met; assist with discharge records and mattress audits.
Qualifications and experience
Essential
* GCSE Maths, English and Science at grade C or above (grade 4)
* Experience in a customer service environment
* Computer literate

* NVQ level 2 or above
* Experience working in the NHS
* Experience in stock ordering and stock rotation
