THE OPPORTUNITY
We are looking for a Systems Engineer with a strong software background to support the development and enhancement of a mission-critical embedded communication system used across military vehicles. This role bridges software, hardware, and systems integration, ensuring intercom and IP-based communication features meet stringent defence standards for reliability, safety, and compliance.
Responsibilities
* Work with the baseline software and system architecture (v2.0), analysing interactions across embedded hardware, firmware, and communication subsystems.
* Define and implement system-level modifications to extend dismounted call capabilities and align with vehicle/crew configurations.
* Retire dependencies on legacy hardware through re-architected solutions.
* Integrate IP/VoIP-based call management, including auto-initiation and acceptance.
* Ensure interoperability and consistency across heterogeneous crew stations.
* Specify, review, and validate system requirements, maintaining full traceability.
* Lead and participate in structured design reviews (System, PDR, CDR, FAT), ensuring alignment with safety and compliance frameworks.
* Support updates to operator-facing interfaces (HMI and web configuration) from a system behaviour perspective.
* Collaborate with verification engineers on integration and regression testing, ensuring system-level acceptance criteria are met.
* Produce and maintain system design documentation, test evidence, and compliance artefacts for customer and certification authority review.
* Coordinate with cross-disciplinary teams (hardware, FPGA, DSP, comms) to deliver end-to-end system solutions.
Essential experience and skills
* Strong foundation in embedded software engineering (C), with the ability to reason at both code and system integration levels.
* Experience with embedded development toolchains (e.g., Xilinx ISE, Altera Quartus, MSP430 CrossWorks, TI Code Composer).
* Familiarity with requirements and verification management tools (e.g., Polarion, TestRail). Proven experience in requirements-driven, compliance-focused engineering within safety-critical or defence programmes.
* Proficiency with engineering toolchains and CI/CD workflows (BitBucket, Jira, Bamboo).
Desirable
* Knowledge of IP networking, VoIP, and real-time communications protocols.
* Background in safety-critical or defence-certified software/hardware systems (e.g., DEF-STAN, DO-178C, MISRA).
* Experience working across system-of-systems environments, managing interfaces and trade-offs between hardware, firmware, and software.
* Contribution to certification, assurance, or acceptance processes in defence or aerospace.
Benefits
* Competitive Basic Salary
* 6% Employers Contribution + 6% as a salary sacrifice
* Private Medical Insurance, Life Cover and Income Protection
* 25 days holiday
* 5 days full sick pay per year
* Flexible working
* Cycle to Work & TechScheme
* Continuous professional development
* Corporate access to the Udemy platform
* Security clearance considerations: foreign or dual nationality is not an automatic bar; some roles may have restrictions.
