Job Summary

To assess learning needs required by staff to enable them to fulfil their role in the Critical Care, in line with the Unit's planned service provision. To develop, implement, organise and evaluate learning resources/competencies and other staff development programmes in order to meet the Units and individuals learning needs. To monitor staff's compliance with all training requirements and to maintain appropriate documentation on staff progress and achievements. Ensure nursing staff are competent in the use of equipment and adhere to Department policies regarding the cleaning and repair of any faulty equipment. Participate in the recruitment of Unit staff when required. Support the Critical Care lead nurse in the management of the critical care area Assist where necessary as a Practice Educators link for Mersey and Cheshire critical care network to ensure standardisation of educational and clinical practice across the network. To organise and facilitate the induction of all staff bands into Critical Care.


Main duties of the job

* 1. Education and Training
o Plan, deliver, and evaluate education and training programmes for staff within the Neuro Critical Care Unit (NCCU).
o Support new starters, preceptorships, and competency-based training (e.g., critical care competencies, neuro‑specific monitoring, ventilation, ICP management).
o Facilitate simulation‑based learning, bedside teaching, and skills assessments.
o Ensure all staff are up to date with mandatory training and clinical competencies.
* 2. Clinical Support and Development
o Act as a clinical resource and role model, supporting evidence‑based practice at the bedside.
o Work alongside staff to support confidence and competence in neuro‑critical care procedures (e.g., EVD management, sedation, neurological assessment, intracranial pressure monitoring).
o Help embed best practice guidelines and national standards (such as those from NICE or the Intensive Care Society).
* 3. Quality and Governance
o Participate in clinical audits, incident reviews, and root cause analyses to identify learning opportunities.
o Support service improvement initiatives to enhance patient safety and care quality.
o Ensure training records and competency frameworks are accurately maintained and meet trust and national standards.
* 4. Student and Learner Support
o Act as a link between universities and the clinical area, supporting nursing, AHP, and medical learners.
o Supervise and assess students, ensuring they achieve their learning outcomes and proficiencies.
o Provide feedback and mentorship to learners at all levels.
* 5. Leadership and Collaboration
o Work closely with the Senior Nursing Team, Clinical Educators, and Practice Development Teams to align training with service priorities.
o Contribute to staff recruitment, retention, and career progression strategies.
o Promote a positive learning culture within the unit, encouraging reflective practice and continuous professional development.
* 6. Specialist Knowledge and Expertise
o Keep up to date with neuroscience and critical care advancements and disseminate new evidence to the team.
o Provide specialist input on topics such as:
+ Traumatic brain injury management
+ Post‑neurosurgical care
+ Seizure management and continuous EEG
+ Neuroprotection and ICP control

Qualifications


Essential

* 1st Level Registration
* Post Registration Critical Care Diploma or Degree or equivalent
* Teaching & Assessment Diploma or Degree or equivalent
* Bachelor's Degree (or working towards)
* Willingness to undertake a PGCE or Master's Degree


Desirable

* Master's Degree
* PGCE


Knowledge & Experience


Essential

* Relevant experience as a registered nurse within Critical Care.
* Evidence of an informal and formal teaching role.
* Portfolio of continuing professional development.
* Evidence of recent and continued formal and informal teaching experience.
* Experience as a clinical supervisor.
* Current knowledge of Adult Critical Care Nursing.
* Understanding of the education training needs of the area and its staff.


Desirable

* Relevant experience as a registered nurse in Neurosciences.
* Evidence of research and audit participation.
* Experience of developing education training packages; knowledge of current changes within the NHS and nurse education.
* Broad knowledge of the framework for pre and post registration education in UK and Europe.
