About the Role

Balfour Beatty was selected by bp (British Petroleum) to construct a first‑of‑a‑kind fully integrated gas‑fired power station with carbon capture and storage, a key driver behind plans to make Teesside the UK’s first decarbonised industrial cluster. We are seeking a dynamic Project Engineer (Electrical Systems) to contribute to the Net Zero Teesside (NZT) project based at our site in Redcar and Cleveland.
What You’ll Be Doing
* Overall responsibility for the successful completion of the section of works and lead by example, managing day‑to‑day delivery of construction projects.
* Ensure site records are accurately maintained and available.
* Ensure all team members are fully inducted and carry out role‑specific requirements, identifying opportunities for improvement.
* Lead and motivate the team, manage performance, and provide training or coaching as appropriate.
* Draw up and monitor short‑term programmes and maintain accurate progress records.
* Deliver regular toolbox talks, positively engage the team, and maintain a relentless focus on zero harm.
* Support the delivery of project sustainability activities.
* Manage sub‑contractors, monitoring attendance and progress, providing direct instruction and support, ensuring contractual arrangements are achieved.
* Produce and review the project programme to guarantee completion on time under project manager supervision.
* Ensure detailed plans are available in alignment with the overall project for timely material and resource delivery.
* Maintain quality targets and KPIs, conduct site audits, and take appropriate actions on findings.
* Instigate improvement options, and lead actions when necessary.
* Manage sub‑contractor performance based on KPIs and ensure production of operational target programmes.
* Liaise with the project manager to identify additional work, potential opportunities, and commercial or specification risks.
* Contribute to weekly team meetings to review performance on site.
* Appreciate commercial implications, incorporate them into decision‑making, and work closely with the project’s surveyor.
Who We’re Looking For
Essential Qualities & Experience
* Track record in managing operational delivery within a construction environment.
* Ability to clearly communicate safe system of work requirements and implement system improvements.
* Ownership of tasks and clear communication of outcomes; experience encouraging direct reports and cascading key messages.
* Capability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and maintain flexibility for variable workloads.
* CSCS card and SMSTS qualification; willingness to obtain first aid qualification.
* Excellent team player, able to work independently without supervision.
* Decision‑making skills based on best available information and a solution‑oriented approach.
* Strong communication, interpersonal, and influencing skills.
* Working proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel).
* Role model for leadership and behaviour aligning to business, project, and team objectives.
* Self‑starter with strong time‑management abilities.
Health, Safety & Environmental
* Understand and coach on method statements and accident/incident investigation principles.
* Knowledge of current H&S legislation and application of H&S management.
* Guidance on accident/incident investigations and improvement implementation.
Quality
* Understand organisational business management systems and processes.
* Experience with handover and self‑certification of works.
Commercial
* Experienced in setting and managing budget targets in line with project objectives.
* Produce realistic programme and track progress proactively.
* Identify cost‑recovery elements, guide team in maintaining project records.
* Understanding of standard forms of contract.
Desirable Qualities & Experience
* Experience on a variety of project types.
* Scaffold and temporary works awareness or experience.
* Relevant formal qualification or pursuit of one.
* Current driving licence.
