Job Overview
We are currently looking for a talented and motivated Assistant Engineer to join our Active Travel team in Edinburgh. This role can be worked flexibly, with a minimum of 3 days per week in the office and the option for adjusted start and finish times.
Responsibilities
* Undertake engineering design and development through the application of proven techniques and procedures to develop appropriate solutions to client problems.
* Prepare feasibility studies to assess constraints, risks, opportunities and route or provision type options to identify an appropriate solution.
* Provide design for cycle track/path alignment, drainage, kerbing, footways and traffic signs and road markings.
* Produce design outputs such as drawings, specifications, schedules, reports and calculations to achieve the optimum solution for the project.
* Work in close collaboration with team members and other design disciplines, appreciating their roles.
* Ensure deliverables are carried out within agreed timescales and budgets.
* Ensure that solutions meet client needs and expectations are met or exceeded.
* Liaise with clients and contractors and supervise works on site when required.
* Ensure that all work is carried out to the Company’s IMS and current H&S legislation requirements.
* Take ownership and responsibility for the quality of work produced and be fully committed to professional development through in‑house training and engagement with professional institution activities.
* Work as part of a diverse and collaborative team to identify and develop solutions to client problems.
Qualifications
* A degree in Civil Engineering, Traffic Engineering or equivalent, and be working towards achieving a relevant professional qualification.
* Knowledge and experience of the planning and delivery of active travel and sustainable transport projects on larger multi‑disciplinary projects.
* Experience of geometry design in accordance with Cycling by Design and LTN 1/20 Cycle Infrastructure Design, using Civils 3D software.
* Understanding of urban design principles and a holistic approach to linear infrastructure design focused on sustainable transport modes and integrated design.
* Understanding of highway regulations and guidance such as Manual for Streets, DMRB, TSRGD, MCHW and the Traffic Signs Manuals and how to apply these in practice.
* Knowledge of drainage design including network assessment, SuDS design and liaison with relevant stakeholders.
* Experience of AutoCAD and a sound understanding of its integration with the BIM environment.
* Desire to create 3D visualisations to aid stakeholder engagement (desirable but not essential).
* Confidence to present design solutions and discuss progress both internally and externally to clients and stakeholders.
* Desire to learn, progress and challenge yourself.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
