About The Role
This is a temporary opportunity for an experienced Environmental Health Officer to join the team on a 3‑month initial contract basis. The role is offered on a full or part‑time basis and requires regular travel around the borough for inspections, with office work on three days a week. The focus of the role will be Public Health & Nuisance and/or Private Sector Housing (HHSRS & HMO). Respond to and investigate complaints and requests for service efficiently and effectively, carrying out actions in accordance with departmental policies, statutory requirements, Codes of Practice and good practice guidance. Pay: up to £45.00 per hour umbrella (inside IR35). Location: Castle Point. Closing Date: 12th June 2026.
The Opportunity
The role involves: ensuring compliance with relevant legislation through proactive inspections, managing complaints and correspondence, maintaining records and statutory registers, attending court where necessary, and representing the Department at meetings with other council departments, local authorities and external agencies.
Accountabilities
* Respond to and investigate complaints and requests for service efficiently and effectively, using departmental policies, statutory requirements, Codes of Practice and good practice guidance.
* Carry out an allocated programme of proactive inspections to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and, where necessary, take follow‑up action in accordance with statutory requirements and corporate/departmental policies and procedures.
* Ensure compliance with legal requirements and other statutory/non‑statutory controls, including gathering and presenting evidence and attending court.
* Maintain all relevant records and statutory registers (written and electronic) and assist with the collation of performance statistics.
* Respond to correspondence and maintain up‑to‑date records on the computer system and premises files of inspections and other visits, ensuring a complete record of cases is maintained for later enquiries, complaints or subsequent legal action.
* Represent the Department as and when required at meetings with officers of other Departments within the Council, or with representatives from other local authorities and/or external agencies, including professional bodies.
Experience You Will Bring
* Degree or Diploma in Environmental Health.
* Practical working experience within an Environmental Health department.
* Ability to be sensitive to the political environment and to deal with difficult customers and situations.
* Broad working knowledge of current Environmental Health legislation.
* Ability to assimilate, analyse and translate technical and statistical information.
