Job posted for Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust. This is a full-time, permanent Band 6 position based at The Royal Surrey Hospital, Guildford.

The theatre suites at RSCH are busy, multi-specialty units committed to delivering a high standard of care. Your proven leadership and organisation skills, ability to prioritise and remain calm under pressure will help you demonstrate excellent communication and drive to succeed.

You should have experience in a wide range of specialties; proven experience of leading a team and be prepared to support both departments during nights, evenings and weekends. We are leaders in Major Laparoscopic Surgery & Robotic Surgery with the Minimal Access Therapy Training Unit, an internationally recognised centre for innovative laparoscopic techniques.


Main duties and responsibilities

* Provide skilled assistance to the anaesthetist or surgeon or work in the post-anaesthetic care unit as required.
* Collaborate with the multidisciplinary theatre team to ensure high-quality, individualized patient care.
* Provide a high standard of patient care and skilled assistance in all specialties as required.
* Responsible for cleaning and maintenance of equipment, and stocking of anaesthetic rooms and theatres per Trust policy.
* Participate in training, support and induction of students, preceptees and new staff in theatres.
* Hold the priority bleep and undertake role as a member of the priority & trauma teams; participate in third-tier on-call rota.
* Assist the Anaesthetic Team Lead in leading the Anaesthetic Practitioner team in delivering patient-centered, evidence-based care.
* Support perioperative management, including monitoring and physiological support; prepare and administer prescribed drugs per Trust policy; monitor drug effects.
* Maintain infection control standards and asepsis; assist in decontamination and sterilisation procedures.
* Provide immediate post-operative care and, on night duty, immediate post-anaesthetic care for post-anaesthetic patients.
* Act as a skilled member of the priority/trauma team and support junior staff during priority and trauma calls.
* Provide help in Day Surgery Theatres as required and care for up to Level 3 patients post-resuscitation or post-operatively.


Qualifications and Requirements

Essential

* City and Guilds 752 / NVQ Level 3 / Dip HE in Operating Department Practice. ANe sthetic Nurses – ENB 182 or equivalent UK-recognised qualification in Anaesthetics.
* Demonstrable knowledge of perioperative practice including up-to-date knowledge of AAGBI, NICE and DAS guidelines.
* Understanding of normal and altered anatomy and physiology and commonly encountered patient conditions.
* Pharmacology knowledge in perioperative care and CPD evidence of post-qualification experience; member of HCPC or NMC.

Desirable

* Management course; mentorship or equivalent; IT skills (email/keyboard skills).

Skills and capabilities

* Effective communication with patients, colleagues and the multidisciplinary team.
* Ability to assess patients and develop individualized perioperative care plans; recognise and respond to physiological changes.
* Strong leadership, prioritisation and delegation abilities; ability to work autonomously and within policy; escalation of issues to senior staff when needed.
* Commitment to infection control and patient safety; ability to support junior staff and lead WHO Surgical Safety Checklist.
