Specialist - Chemical Hazard Evaluation - 30921

We are recruiting a regulatory scientist to assess the environmental hazard and risk of industrial and consumer chemicals under the UK REACH and CLP Regulations.

Working in a team of science specialists in our Chemicals Assessment Unit (CAU), you will:

1. Evaluate the reliability and relevance of ecotoxicity and environmental fate information and safety assessments in chemical dossiers and reports.
2. Summarize and present endpoints from environmental effects studies, fate data, and model estimates.
3. Describe study test methods, highlighting data limitations and uncertainties.
4. Use data to conclude on environmental classifications under CLP and ensure UK REACH registration standards are met.
5. Provide quality assurance reviews and alternative interpretations when necessary.
6. Contribute to priority setting and identify areas for further research.
7. Support test guideline development and work on animal replacement methods.
8. Work to defined timescales to deliver timely outputs within resources.
9. Build relationships and consult with colleagues in other teams and government bodies.

Responding to incidents is a key part of this role. You will be expected to participate in incident response and business continuity support, with full training provided. This may include additional payments.

The Chemicals Assessment Unit is part of the Research division of the Chief Scientist’s Group, with dispersed team locations. We provide scientific support to HSE and UK Government on environmental hazards, propose risk management actions, and collaborate with global partners.

Experience/skills Required

You should have at least a first degree in a relevant scientific discipline such as chemistry, biology, or environmental science. A minimum of two years of applied experience assessing environmental effects or fate of chemicals is required, either in industry or regulatory sectors.

You must be capable of analyzing complex scientific data, following guidance, and communicating findings effectively. Strong writing, organizational, and communication skills are essential. Please demonstrate your relevant experience in environmental hazard and risk assessments, especially related to REACH and CLP regulations, in your application answers.

Additional Information

The role offers flexible/hybrid working; some travel may be required. Read the Candidate/Additional Information Pack for more details on answering competency questions. Interviews are scheduled for July via MS Teams, potentially including a technical data exercise. For further questions, contact ukreachenv@environment-agency.gov.uk.
