Motor Crime Lawyer
The Assistant Lawyer will assist Tim Ingram in our Crime and Regulatory Team, dealing with motor crime cases from basic offences to serious incidents such as dangerous driving, manslaughter, or serious injury. The role will involve investigating the incident circumstances, supporting the clients, taking statements, attending interviews under caution, and assisting with the case through to resolution.
We are able to consider full or part-time hours between 28 – 35 hours per week. The role is suitable for someone with a legal aid background looking to move into private practice, possibly an NQ with 6‑12 months in a criminal setting, located in the Midlands, South‑East, East or South‑West. It will require travel to attend police stations and courts.
Key Responsibilities
 * Review and analyse prosecution evidence and consider implications for the lay client/company
 * Draft statements of insured/witnesses
 * Review client’s evidence, collate, index, cross‑reference with own statements and the prosecution’s statements, summarise evidence for lead file handlers
 * Liaise with the Court, Coroner’s Office and CQC/Police/HSE or relevant regulator
 * Liaise with experts – instruct own experts, summarise expert evidence, serve reports
 * Serve defence case statements, sentencing bundles and mitigation bundles
 * Draft written submissions, liaising with lay client/corporate client
 * Liaise with clients regarding the prosecution’s case and disclosure required
 * Review transcripts of evidence
 * Organise and attend conferences & meetings, draft notes of discussion and follow agreed strategy based on lead lawyer’s strategy
 * Attend/interview under caution
 * Attend behind counsel for trials & inquests – draft notes of evidence, outcome and sentencing
 * Arrange meetings, conferences, site visits and expert appointments
 * Collate evidence and prepare bundles
 * Review medical records, post‑mortem reports and CCTV footage
 * Attend site, take photos and draft basic statements
 * Research relevant HSE guidelines
 * Research clients – corporate structure, procedures, risk assessments, documents
 * Ensure compliance with the SRA standards & regulations
 * Prepare written reports and advice for clients
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
 * A qualified solicitor with motor crime experience
 * Ability to prioritise workload
 * Attention to detail
 * Experience with case‑management systems
 * Personal skills to deal with clients in a sensitive manner given the context of their circumstances
 * Good telephone and communication skills with people at all levels inside and outside the business
 * Calm under pressure
 * Self‑confidence, good literacy and IT skills
 * Good team worker with flexibility to achieve client service levels
 * Ability to work effectively within the Keoghs Shared Values framework
