Position Summary

This position may be located within a Hospital Facility, Patient Service Center (PSC), In Office Phlebotomy (IOP) or Mobile Diagnostic Services (MDS). It may be responsible for providing coverage at multiple locations. The position is responsible for the collection and receipt of biological specimens into the department, proper entry into the company’s computer system, preparation of samples for analytical testing, and distribution of specimens to the correct analytical area. It includes responsibility for pre‑ and post‑analytical testing and will also perform specified analytical testing as assigned. Duties are performed in accordance with the guidelines of the Code of Conduct.

Core Functions

* Specimen collection; general laboratory specimen processing; referral laboratory processing. Ensuring correct patient and specimen identification and specimen integrity by using appropriate techniques for all age criteria.
* Entering and verifying patient demographics, location, physician data, test requests, time and date of collection, relevant clinical information, and all other pertinent data from requisitions and computer‑generated orders. Verifying accuracy and appropriateness of specimens, aliquoting and labeling specimens according to departmental procedures, delivering to the technical area or performing initial sample preparation for transport. May assist in monitoring workflow and training new employees.
* Quality focus by ensuring all work performed is accurate and complete. Completing documents legibly and accurately per site protocol. Following established methods and practices. Maintaining familiarity with departmental procedures. Recording communications and initiating computer‑generated reports for patient reporting and quality assurance. Meeting departmental standards for productivity and quality as defined. Actively participating in committees or Six Sigma teams. Maintaining acceptable specimen rejection rates.
* Participating in departmental financial responsibilities through appropriate use of supplies and materials. Avoiding excessive waste. Participating in initiatives to reduce costs and improve service. Basic knowledge of billing. Commitment to an error‑free work environment.
* Communicating courteously and professionally with internal and external customers. Interacting with coworkers with an emphasis on teamwork and customer service. Working in all areas, departments, and shifts as assigned. Resolving basic service issues. Attending meetings and staying current with internal/external communications.
* Acknowledging and understanding the importance of patient rights and privacy (HIPAA).


Physical Demands

Able to stand, walk, bend, squat, reach, and stretch frequently. Required to lift, push, or pull up to 25 pounds. Requires manual dexterity and standard precautions due to potential exposure to blood and body fluids, chemical, electrical, and biological hazards. Must be able to distinguish colors and follow directions quickly. Requires use of computer, printers, copiers, telephone, fax, and department‑specific equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

* Minimum age 18.
* High school diploma or equivalent, meeting state regulatory requirements.
* Basic knowledge of department resource materials.
* Completion of a phlebotomy program or phlebotomy experience.
* Phlebotomy certification as defined by state regulations.
* May require DHS Fingerprinting Certification or ability to obtain it.
* Valid state driver’s license in the state of employment and eligibility for coverage under the company auto insurance policy.
* Float positions require travel and flexible hours to work multiple locations, cover mobile and in‑office phlebotomy sites with minimal notice. Flexible and available based on staffing requirements, weekends, holidays, overtime, and occasional on‑call duties.
* Progression through career ladder II‑IV subject to completion of career ladder requirements.


Preferred Qualifications

* Bilingual (Spanish/English).
* Knowledge of medical terminology.
* Additional related education and/or experience.
