Offer description

Our client is a successful and well established manufacturer. They are looking for an experienced Design Engineer to develop, design and deliver products that meet specification within project timescales.

The role will incorporate a wide range of responsibilities:

Product improvement:

To reduce costs and improve the quality of current products.
Support customers and internal departments by ensuring the necessary support and documentation is available.
Strengthen weak business systems and bring increased rigor to the engineering and manufacturing control of current products.

Concept development:

Develop ideas and prototypes to establish the feasibility of designs using suitable prototyping techniques.
Support marketing with the timely development of product specifications and Engineering Manager with the development of the project timing plan and the other deliverables required by the NPD process.

Product design:

Develop product designs using the CAD system. This includes 3D models, cutting lists, MRP data, assembly instructions, drawings and supporting information e.g. exploded views. The design activity will require risk assessments of the design.
Closely monitor costs and expected manufacturing times.
Support production with their production planning.
Help manage any draughting work undertaken by persons in this specific role.
Check the work of others as required.

Product approval:

Develop a qualification plan and execute the required product testing against the relevant legislative requirements and compile the technical files for approval by either a third party or the Engineering Manager.
Testing can be internal, supervised or by third party.

Product testing:

Organise, manage and conduct testing of new and current products to support design, quality and sourcing (cost reduction and new suppliers) activities.
Help manage any testing work undertaken by persons in the support roles.

Product knowledge and support:

The company manufactures and markets a wide range of products. The engineering team needs to support these products in a variety of ways including answering questions from customers, commercial and operations colleagues.
You will proactively develop their product, component and systems knowledge, and will be able to effectively contribute to technical work, with supporting data and evidence, to support the Engineering Manager when requested and when assigned to work in a product improvement role.

Production preparation:

Document product manufacturing work instructions and advise production of any jigs and test equipment that will be required.
Work with Inspection/Quality to ensure inspection procedures are updated and modified if required.

Optimising products for production:

New designs should achieve production and warranty objectives within the original NPD project.
Consult with operators during all builds, seek feedback and modify designs to aid assembly.

Innovation:

Engineers will contribute to the company’s growth with ideas for new products, cost reductions and quality improvements. This will be achieved through a combination of market knowledge, business knowledge, competitor knowledge and a general interest in science and engineering.

Product improvements:

Reducing costs and improve the quality of current products when required.

Specifications:

Work iteratively with sales and marketing to develop and document product requirement specifications including cost, performance, features and DFM requirements.

Secondment:

Secondment to Production or other departments maybe required

Salary: £40,000 - £45,000 depending on experience

Hours of work: Normal day hours, however some flexibility will be required.

APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS:

* Formal engineering qualification – HNC, HND, Degree, ideally mechanical, is preferred but equivalent industry experience will be considered if there is evidence of continuing CPD and demonstrable theoretical knowledge of engineering principles.

* Mechanical or Electrical qualifications are a benefit.

* 3D CAD experience is essential (Solid Edge), particularly in sheet metal design.

* Mechanical and electrical dexterity is essential in order to assemble mechanical and electrical components.

* Electrical circuit design and knowledge of electrical components is advantageous.

* Gas system design and knowledge of gas components is advantageous.

* Must be goal focussed, able to demonstrate the drive and commitment needed to achieve results within agreed timescales, working from concept to completion.

* Be familiar with the sheet metal manufacturing processes (cutting, folding, welding, jointing).

* Product testing.

* Product and project costing experience.

* Microsoft Word, Excel, analysing test results.

* Able and willing to visit customers and suppliers in the UK, Europe and possibly US and Asia.

This role would suit someone with previous job titles such as; Mechanical Design Engineer / Electrical Design Engineer / CAD Designer / CAD Technician / Senior Design Technician / Draughtsman / Draughtsperson / Draughter / Solid Edge Designer / NPD Engineer / New Product Development Engineer / Design Engineering / etc
