Job Overview
Are you a confident biomedical scientist leader ready to make a real impact in a fast‑paced blood sciences pathology environment? We are seeking a Blood Sciences Manager to guide our department by planning, leading, organising, and overseeing laboratory operations in alignment with the clinical direction of Lead Consultants in Haematology, Chemistry, and Immunology. You will maintain and enhance performance, quality, efficiency, and safety through effective management and continuous improvement.
This role also serves as the Deputy Director of Pathology, supporting the Director of Pathology and representing the service at divisional, Trust, and network‑level meetings.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead, coordinate and monitor the work of Haematology, Chemistry, and Immunology sections, managing workflows, staffing and service integration.
* Manage and oversee administration and blood science reception staff (approx. 50 WTE).
* Provide overall management, organisation, and operational problem‑solving for day‑to‑day laboratory service across relevant Severn Pathology sites.
* Develop and manage business continuity and resilience arrangements.
* Manage employee productivity, scheduling, rostering, training, skills development and succession planning.
* Ensure quality of laboratory services, meeting accreditation and quality control standards.
* Monitor and report on service and financial performance, driving improvements to meet targets and enhance customer service.
* Oversee laboratory equipment management, consumables, and liaise with suppliers for maintenance and fault resolution.
* Collab with Health and Safety Lead to manage operational safety across the laboratory.
* Support Lead Consultants in developing diagnostic techniques for patient pathways.
* Scout new business opportunities, scope possibilities and support service bids.
* Plan and implement integrated multi‑section service developments.
Education, Training and Qualifications
* Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences (FIBMS) or equivalent.
* Current registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
* Relevant postgraduate qualification at Masters level and/or extensive specialist experience.
* Evidence of commitment to continuing professional development.
Desirable
* Relevant management qualification or demonstrable management skills from a portfolio of evidence.
Work Experience
* Extensive leadership and operational management experience (5+ years) within a healthcare provider.
* Experience managing a large budget and delivering significant savings plans.
* Experience establishing and maintaining relationships with external organisations.
* Experience managing complex operational situations involving staff across levels and boundaries.
* Track record of delivering strategic level projects or workstreams.
* Experience leading substantial service change and redesign in a complex environment.
* Demonstrable performance improvement achievements.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
* Excellent understanding of NHS strategy, policy and impact on Pathology services.
* In‑depth knowledge of current Pathology issues.
* Clear understanding of Trust’s specialist provider status and its impact on Pathology services.
* Exceptional knowledge of statutory requirements covering Health & Safety, COSHH and UKAS Accreditation.
* Significant experience leading and working effectively in a multi‑professional environment.
