We are currently seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to join a premier team of Firefighters at the, Royal Air Force (RAF), United Kingdom.

What will be your primary role?

The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a Firefighter assigned to a crew engaged in airfield, structural firefighting, crash-rescue, and Hazardous materials (HAZMAT) Technician, to drive and operate firefighting vehicles of significant complexity, and to respond to the presence or potential release of hazardous materials for the purpose of stopping or controlling the release. This position will include performing hazard and risk assessment and conduct complete incident analysis whilst driving and operating firefighting vehicles, such as pumpers, aerial ladder trucks and Airport rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) vehicles. You will also perform crash-rescue and firefighting duties involving air traffic or support operations where hazardous conditions are such that the expectancy for fire is high and potential for becoming destructive is great. You will also perform structural firefighting duties for a variety of facilities, which may include large multi storied buildings, industrial areas, and/or base storage facilities. This position will also include performing rescue of personnel and a variety of first aid measures, and also maintain firefighting equipment and fire station facilities. You will also be responsible for complying with health, safety and environmental rules and procedures and perform work in a manner that enhances the safety of work environment.

What are the Key Skills required for this role?

1. Knowledge to drive and operate firefighting vehicles of significant complexity, and the principles of hydraulics as they pertain to waterflow, water pressure, water levels, line (friction) losses, etc.

2. Knowledge of basic and specialized airfield and structural firefighting equipment (fire alarm system operation, fire extinguishing equipment operation, etc.), techniques, and procedures; and of basic and specialized building design, construction, and occupancy.

3. Knowledge of hazardous materials emergency response procedures, equipment, identification, and mitigation actions.

4. Knowledge of emergency first aid techniques; and of safety requirements as outlined in applicable safety standards, regulations, and/or technical orders.

5. Skill in operating communications equipment.

6. Ability to maintain good working relations; to communicate orally and in writing; to lift and carry heavy loads; and to apply emergency first aid techniques; and to conduct complete HAZMAT incident analysis.

What are the conditions of employment for this role?

1. You will be required to handle and safeguard sensitive information in accordance with applicable US and UK laws, rules and regulations.

2. You may be required to travel by military and/or civilian aircraft and you may also be required to travel to the US or other country, in the performance of official duties or attend necessary training, this position may also be coded as mission essential.

3. You will be required to complete a 12-month probationary period.

4. Overtime may be required, and you may be assigned other duties not included in this position description, but that are appropriate to the grade and skill set of the incumbent.

5. Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

6. Employee must participate in a mandatory physical fitness program.

7. Employee is required to use all safety equipment and clothing provided by management.

8. This position is considered operations, therefore the incumbent is entitled to receive an Operational Firefighter Pay Supplement for working an approved "as rostered" (any 5 days out of 7) shift pattern totaling 192 hours over 4 weeks, which may include weekends and bank holidays.

9. Employee may be subject to recall, the employee may be subject to random drug testing.

10. This position require3s the employee to work under adverse environmental conditions and falls under the respiratory protection program and hearing conservation program.

11. The employee will be subject to a preemployment physical which will include testing the ability to discern colours, contract and depth.

12. Some training may require re-certification on a regular and/or intermittent basis.

13. Subject to UK retirement rules. This is a Primary operations position; UK retirement rules apply. There is a mandatory retirement age of 60 years for firefighters hired under the Local National Direct Hire Program.

14. May be required to work in the Fire Alarm and Communications Center (FACC), and may be required to maintain certification as a Telecommunicator (Level I & II). Employee is required to be certified by the Department of Defense (DOD) Firefighter Certification System in the following: Airport Firefighter (includes Firefighter I, II), HAZMAT Awareness, HAZMAT Operations, HAZMAT Technician, Apparatus Driver Operator – Pumper, Apparatus Driver Operator – Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF), Apparatus Driver Operator- Aerial (if applicable), Apparatus Driver Operator- Mobile Water Supply (MWS) (if applicable) - Training plans will be established and monitored by the supervisor and may specify the length of time the employee has to obtain certification(s).
