Join to apply for the Studies of chlamydial inclusion biogenesis PhD Studentship role at Minderoo Centre for Technology and Democracy. The Department of Pathology at the University of Cambridge has an excellent reputation in pure biological and biomedical research and is offering a fully funded studentship from October 2026. The funding will cover the student's stipend at the current Research Council rate and home university fees for 4 years.
Project
Project Title: Studies of chlamydial inclusion biogenesis
Chlamydia trachomatis is an obligate intracellular pathogen that causes sexually transmitted disease and trachoma. The bacteria survive and replicate within a host cell compartment called an inclusion. The inclusion is decorated with chlamydial proteins that subvert host cell functions, preventing degradation yet enabling nutrient acquisition. This project aims to investigate the poorly understood mechanisms by which bacteria selectively transport material into the inclusion using a combination of biochemical, bioimaging and cell biology approaches.
Responsibilities
* Conduct biochemical, bioimaging, and cell biology studies on chlamydial inclusion biogenesis.
* Investigate mechanisms of selective material transport into the inclusion.
* Prepare and publish research findings in peer‑reviewed journals.
* Present results at conferences and seminars within the department.
Funding and Duration
Funding covers the 4‑year studentship from October 2026, including stipend and home university fees at the current Research Council rate. The studentship is fully funded and renewable for the duration of the PhD.
