Lufton College is a 52-week residential specialist college providing quality care and education for young people aged 16 to 25 with a diagnosis of autism, or whose difficulties place them on the autistic continuum. Our students often have complex needs, associated learning difficulties and behaviours of concern. Our curriculum is designed to prepare students for adulthood and equip them with the skills and knowledge to achieve their personal best. Learning takes place in a variety of settings, including within students’ homes, vocational placements both internally and externally, classrooms, and outdoor activities. The college is located on three sites near Yeovil, spread across 40+ acres with forest areas, small farm areas and ample outdoor spaces.
Main Responsibilities
* Lead on strategic curriculum development of core curriculum areas (Literacy and Numeracy) and quality assurance of curriculums across the college.
* Lead and undertake quality assurance activities as directed by the Assistant Principal, such as scrutiny of curriculum planning, learning walks, formal observations, and scrutiny of student progress data.
* Line manage and support the ongoing professional development of SEN Tutors and Teachers, including leading Tutors training to become teachers (Level 5 apprentices and QTLS).
* Deliver coaching and training to education staff in line with the college’s continuous quality improvement plan and cycle, assisted by the wider team.
* Act as Education Head in the absence of the Assistant Principal, ensuring the provision within the education team runs effectively and safely.
* Collaborate with care and education teams as part of a multi-disciplinary approach to expand opportunities and improve skills for young people.
* Participate in the Senior Management team, attending meetings, reviewing attendance, KPIs and self-directed action setting to support governance targets.
* Be on timetable to deliver specialist input to students for up to 20% of the time (including co-teaching to develop Tutors and Teachers’ pedagogy).
Requirements
* Post-Graduate Certificate in Education
* Degree in a relevant subject (transferable to college curriculum)
* At least 2 years’ experience as a curriculum lead or in a similar role with additional responsibility relating to quality of education and/or coaching teachers (NPQ is desirable)
* At least 3 years’ experience as a qualified teacher within an education facility
* Understanding of Gatsby Benchmarks for SEND
* Understanding of Autism and Learning Disabilities, and the impact of complex needs on learning and adapted opportunities
* Knowledge of Keeping Children Safe in Education including safeguarding principles for adults and children
* Clean and current driving licence
