By converting by-products and waste from industries such as food, drink, and agriculture into green chemicals (bio acetone, bio butanol, and bio ethanol), Celtic Renewables is providing access to cleaner, greener alternatives. \n\nThe Grangemouth facility is the exemplar to building larger scale facilities across the UK and is also our training centre for apprentices. By joining Celtic Renewables, youâll be part of an innovative team working at a world-leading biorefinery, helping to lead the green chemical revolution. \n\nAs a Laboratory Apprentice, you will complete a two year Applied Science Modern Apprenticeship based at Celtic Renewables Grangemouth Manufacturing Centre where you will learn about the ABE process. Over the 4 years, you will receive dedicated training to become a qualified Laboratory Technician gaining the skills and experience to make a real impact within the Green Chemical sector within Grangemouth. \n\nThe Laboratory Apprentice plays a critical support role within the lab team, learning through hands-on experience, shadowing, and formal training. This role provides foundational knowledge in Good Lab Practice (GLP) and skill development across a wide range of laboratory operations. The apprentice will assist in routine lab tasks, ensure compliance with health and safety standards, and progressively develop the competencies required for independent technical work in a laboratory environment.\nYou will study at Forth Valley College on day release one day per week with additional time spent during college holidays learning and shadowing our experience laboratory team to get a better understanding of the business whilst you learn at college. \n\nSafety and Compliance\nâ¢\tFollow all safety protocols and procedures, including proper use of PPE.\nâ¢\tAdhere to regulatory requirements for chemical handling and waste disposal.\nâ¢\tSupport health & safety compliance initiatives.\n\nLaboratory Maintenance\nâ¢\tClean laboratory equipment and surfaces to ensure a safe, hygienic workspace.\nâ¢\tOrganize supplies and consumables, maintaining order in storage areas.\nâ¢\tPerform routine daily equipment and area checks.\n\nSample Preparation & Reagent Handling\nâ¢\tMeasure, mix, and prepare materials accurately for experiments.\nâ¢\tPrepare reagents used in daily testing and analysis.\n\nEquipment Handling & Maintenance\nâ¢\tDevelop knowledge of lab instrumentation and its purpose.\nâ¢\tAssist in setting up and operating basic laboratory instruments.\nâ¢\tAssist with preventive maintenance tasks as directed.\nâ¢\tLearn theory and calibration of lab equipment under supervision.\n\nData Management\nâ¢\tAccurately record experiment data and observations in laboratory notebooks and electronically.\n\nScientific Techniques & Analysis\nâ¢\tUnder supervision, perform analysis and techniques such as:\no\tMicrobiology\no\tGas Chromatography (GC)\no\tHigh-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)\no\tKarl Fischer titration\nâ¢\tSupport raw material & effluent analysis as part of quality checks.\n\nLearning & Development\nâ¢\tParticipate in structured online and practical learning programs.\nâ¢\tShadow experienced lab staff to build core knowledge and lab skills.\nâ¢\tRegular 1:1 and personal development meetings College Attendance - Attend Forth Valley College to study a Higher National Certificate in Applied Biological sciences. \n\nThis will be day release 1 day per week over a four-year period. \n One of the following:\nâ¢\tNC Applied Science Level 6\nâ¢\tFoundation Apprenticeship in Scientific Technologies and a further Higher at grade C or above\nâ¢\tAn appropriate group of National Qualification units\nâ¢\tA minimum of two Highers at grade C or above (Preferably to include Biology and Chemistry) \n\nAdditional Requirements: \nâ¢\tSome form of work experience (all types considered).\nâ¢\tA responsible attitude with a strong appetite to learn and apply within the working environment. \nâ¢\tKeen interest in science and laboratory work\nâ¢\tStrong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy\nâ¢\tWillingness to learn and follow instructions\nâ¢\tGood organisational and time management skills\nâ¢\tBasic computer literacy \nâ¢\tTeam player with good communication skills
