Job Summary
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us. Medical Examiners are senior medical doctors who review and scrutinise all non-coronial deaths, contract for a number of sessions per week outside of usual clinical duties, and oversee the death certification process.
Main duties
* Provide statutory review of all deaths for hospital and community settings.
* Demonstrate independence and provide timely, compassionate service for people in difficult times.
We are looking for
* Experience clinician with wide-ranging clinical insight; excellent verbal and written communication; robust analytical skills.
* Understanding of grief; ability to work in a small multi-professional team of medical examiners and officers.
* Valid GMC registration in the UK.
Job responsibilities
* Scrutiny of notes for deceased patients, discussion of proposed cause of death with the attending team, and communication of the cause of death to bereaved families.
* Identify whether a case requires referral to the Coroner's Office; promote robust, transparent, and independent scrutiny of death certification.
* Work with Coroners and Registrars of Deaths; contribute to service improvement and ensure appropriate referrals.
Essential qualifications and attributes
* Medical Practitioner with GMC registration and licence to practise.
* Up-to-date knowledge of causes of death and legal frameworks around death certification.
* Knowledge of diverse faith groups and commitment to equality and diversity.
* Ability to work in multi-professional teams and to participate in on-call rotas.
* Strong communication skills and ability to teach and share good practice.
