Job overview

The BRC AHP Research Fellowship scheme is a secondment opportunity open to Band 7 UCLH allied health professionals, pharmacists, healthcare scientists, registered nurses, midwives who are not primarily employed in research roles, but are looking to develop or enhance research skills and experience in experimental medicine.

Candidates must identify their own project allowing them to undertake to research for 2 days per week or equivalent hours for up to 24 months in an area aligned to one of the BRC Cancer theme strategic sub-themes:

1. Translating Genetic Understanding of cancer into better treatment
2. Innovating Cancer Immunotherapy
3. Revolutionising early diagnosis of cancer and relapse/progression
4. Integrating radiotherapy into precision oncology
5. Early phase clinical trials

The scheme:

• Builds transferable skills in experimental medicine

All Fellows will be remunerated at their current salary grade. The Fellowship is primarily aimed at providing salary support, but up to £5K can be requested for consumables, and travel.

Main duties of the job

For this secondment opportunity, candidates are required to submit a project proposal in experimental medicine that aligns with the Cancer theme’s strategic sub-themes. You will be expected to align with an experienced research team.

You will be motivated and ambitious in your desire to pursue an experimental medicine career in oncology and be a visible research ambassador within your discipline.

In the delivery of your proposed research project you must be willing to make a significant contribution to the cancer theme strategic sub-theme that your project aligns to.

Duties
• Carry out high quality innovative research in oncology or haematology experimental medicine
• Collaborate with an experienced research team throughout the fellowship
• Develop research methodologies; collect, analyse and interpret data
• Publish in peer-review journals as appropriate
• Contribute to grant writing and applications for high quality innovative research as appropriate
• Develop research networks and establish collaboration
• Act as a research ambassador to encourage AHP engagement in research
• Participate in relevant training and development activities
• Support translation of findings into clinical practice
Applicants wishing to apply for the Fellowship should discuss the possible secondment with their existing line manager before applying and also negotiate current clinical duties. Contracts/secondment agreements may also need to be organised between institutions
