Overview
As a Rail Operator GPR (General Purpose Relief) at South Western Railway, you will be at the heart of ensuring trains are safely and efficiently dispatched and stations are presented to high standards. You will provide up-to-date travel information for customers and assist them in reaching their destinations safely and on time. As this is a GPR position, you will cover a variety of shifts across several different locations. Public transport cannot always be relied upon to get to and from work, so please check travel to each location before applying.
Responsibilities
* Safely dispatch trains from the platform, ensuring all customers are clear of the train while observing the correct signal is showing. You will need normal colour vision for this position.
* Offer passenger assistance to those who need it, including help with moving luggage or helping customers board and alight trains with ramps.
* Keep customers updated about their journeys by making announcements and through face-to-face interactions, bringing your own personality to create a personal experience for customers.
* Be flexible and proactive in a variety of tasks to ensure the station meets quality and safety standards. This may include cleaning toilets, checking systems, clearing rubbish, or helping customers. You are the face of SWR and can make a difference to someone’s day. Our customers rely on us every day (except Christmas Day), and you will be able to work shifts at all times of the day and on every day of the week across multiple locations.
* Work an average of 37 hours per week across 5 days, with additional hours on Sundays as part of a roster. Shifts will vary and include early, late, night, weekend and bank holidays.
Shifts and Location
Typical shifts: earliest start 05:00; latest finish outside a night shift 00:00; nights start 22:00. You will cover a variety of shifts across several locations.
Qualifications and Requirements
* Normal colour vision for this position.
* Organised, proactive and able to efficiently prioritise tasks.
* Able to cope with repetitive tasks under pressure.
* A great communicator who enjoys working with people.
* Confident and happy to approach and talk to new people.
* Passionate about doing the right thing – nothing is too much trouble.
* This is a safety-critical role and you will be required to pass a medical including vision and hearing tests.
* Applicants who require a visa must have 6 months remaining at the time of their appointment. Training is full-time and you must be able to commit to this.
