Blackstone Recruitment are working with a client who are looking to recruit a permanent Speech and Language Therapist for a therapy based service in Minehead, Somerset.

Main Purpose:

To work as a dynamic speech and language therapist as part of a multi-disciplinary team within the therapy service. To provide a high standard of speech and language therapy assessment and intervention to children and young people, including advice and training to relevant parents, carers and professionals in line with proposed treatment plans.

Roles and Responsibilities:

• To work autonomously, managing a caseload of young people with complex needs within a special education setting.

• To lead in the assessment and treatment of children and young people at the college, liaise effectively with multi-disciplinary colleagues and to maintain associated records in line with professional codes of conduct.

• To take a lead role in the teaching other members of the multi-disciplinary team on relevant aspects of speech and language therapy.

• To undertake autonomous assessment of young people with a wide range of additional communication needs attending the college.

• To analyse and interpret assessments to recommend and deliver the best course of intervention for each child.

• To formulate, evaluate and review individualised speech and language therapy treatment plans, using clinical reasoning skills and utilising a wide range of treatment options to formulate a specialised programme of care.

• To demonstrate sound understanding of clinical governance and clinical risk and to demonstrate the use of treatment plans with an evidence-based link.

• To be responsible for the maintenance of accurate written records in line with professional code of conduction.

• Maintain and update professional expertise and competence in line with requirements of continued professional development, analysing current research and discussing and implementing changes in clinical practice accordingly.

• To undertake any other duties as may be deemed necessary.

• Attend appropriate reviews and team meetings, promoting our culture of joint working with other disciplines and outside agencies.

• Advice and work with colleagues and Senior Leaders in regards to support plans and issues arising that relate to speech and language therapy.

• Provide a speech and language therapy service, which is run in an efficient manner so that young people’s needs are met effectively.

• To ensure confidentiality at all times, only releasing confidential information obtained during the course of employment to those acting in an official capacity in accordance with the provisions of the data protection act and its amendments.

• Provide speech and language therapy training, support and advice to members of the multidisciplinary teams.

• Delivery of both direct and indirect speech and language therapy interventions.

• Multi-disciplinary working with staff teams – target setting and supporting the delivery of individual programmes within the curriculum.

• Promotion of a Total Communication approach across the service.

• Multi-disciplinary and multi-agency working, to ensure joined-up management (for complex needs).

• Development and delivery of staff training on communication.

• Provision of advice and support to families, carers and other relevant parties.

• Delegation of tasks to the speech and language assistant / other support staff.

• To contribute to the development of the wider service implementation plan in respect of speech and language therapy input.

• To liaise with the other Speech and Language Therapists operating within the college to ensure appropriate caseload management and sharing of skills.

• Manage and prioritise caseload according to individual needs, to ensure equitable service delivery.

• Produce timely and concise clinical recording, maintaining confidentially and the safe storage of both written and digital data.

• Liaise with other staff in order to set of relevant communication targets in line with various frameworks.

• Plan, implement and review individual communication profiles and provide accessible written guidelines that can be delegated and delivered by others.

• Regularly monitor and review outcomes for communication aims/programmes and modify as required.

• Provide clear and concise written reports for inclusion within Annual Review Reports. Attend and contribute to Annual Review Meetings.

• Liaise and work with other relevant agencies or professionals to gain and share information as required, (medical professionals, therapists, dieticians etc.), to include attendance at appointments where necessary e.g. transitions.

• Model good practice in terms of total communication / social communication techniques.

• Provide speech therapy interventions, as required for individuals, groups and within education areas.

• Provide screening assessment for prospective new students; this may include visits to other schools/residential settings.

• Recognise own professional boundaries with the role and when to seek appropriate guidance



Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Essential

To be a registered member of RCSLT and HCPC.

To hold a professional Speech and Language Therapy degree or equivalent.

Ability to demonstrate a commitment to continued professional development.

Experience:

Essential,

* Previous experience of working as a Speech and Language Therapist.

* Experience in implementing a wide range of approaches in supporting young people with social communication difficulties.

* Experience of preparing complex reports

Desirable,

* Experience in working with young people with autistic spectrum conditions including Asperger’s syndrome, social and emotional difficulties, anxiety disorders and mental health needs.

* Experience of multi-disciplinary team and multi-agency working.



Skills, Abilities, Knowledge:

Essential,

* Knowledge and experience of working with people who have social communication difficulties and providing relevant intervention strategies.

* Fluent in written and spoken English with the ability to communicate complex information in a clear manner to a range of audiences including young people, parents, and professionals.

* Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to relate to others and develop good working relationships.

* Good time-management and organisation skills. Ability to organise and prioritise own workload.

* Ability to assess, devise and implement integrated therapy plans, based on identified needs.

* Ability to train staff in a variety of approaches

* Ability to keep legible and accurate notes in line with professional recording keeping requirements.

* Ability to cope with working in an environment which can be stressful and unpredictable.

Desirable:

* Good IT skills for administrations, recording and reporting systems

* Lone working experience

* Knowledge of relevant legislation, current government initiatives

* Knowledge of strategies for behaviour management
