Band 8a Senior Pharmacist - Patient Services

Main area: Patient Services (Pharmacy). Band 8a. Contract: Fixed term 12 months (1 Year Maternity Cover). Hours: Full time. Job ref: 162-7321-AV. Site: King George Hospital, Goodmayes. Salary: £61,631 - £68,623 per annum (inclusive). Closing: 23/09/2025 23:59.

PEOPLE are at the HEART of everything we do. This role describes an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and experienced pharmacist to join as a patient services pharmacist at King George Hospital, Goodmayes.

The post holder will be responsible for managing and coordinating the day-to-day pharmacists’ workload within the dispensary at King George Hospital and supporting the pharmacy department in providing a comprehensive, patient-orientated pharmacy service in the dispensary and at ward level throughout Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (BHRUT). They will work closely with senior colleagues and technicians to ensure the provision of an integrated and efficient service. The post holder will coordinate the operational demands of the service on a day-to-day basis and be the first point of contact for continuity plans. The post holder will be responsible for coordinating and publishing rotas for weekend and late duty shifts.

Our ideal candidate would be a self-motivated pharmacist with good team work and organisational skills. You must have hospital pharmacy experience (preferably some of this in a UK hospital) and must have completed the Postgraduate Diploma in General Pharmacy Practice. You must also be able to work with senior medical and nursing staff and other health care professionals and manage a busy workload.


Main duties of the job

* To provide comprehensive, patient-orientated pharmacy services throughout King George Hospital and other BHRUT sites
* To ensure that service provision is flexible and responsive to patient needs
* Participate in the management and development of patient services
* Participate in the maintenance and development of pharmacy policies, procedures and standards in liaison with other members of the pharmacy team
* Assist with developing and maintaining assurance processes for quality and safety in all areas of medicines use and storage, including participation in regular audit
* To participate in the induction, training and supervision of Medicines Management Pharmacy technicians, pre-registration Pharmacists and band 6 pharmacists, including the development of such training programs
* To participate in other training external to the pharmacy department (e.g. nurse training, patient rehabilitation education programmes)


Qualifications/Experience

* Hospital pharmacy experience, preferably in a UK hospital
* Postgraduate Diploma in General Pharmacy Practice
* Ability to work with senior medical and nursing staff and other health care professionals and manage a busy workload
* Demonstrates advanced clinical reasoning and judgement; strong leadership skills
* Comprehensive experience as a clinical pharmacist practitioner with solid grounding in all aspects of hospital pharmacy practice
* Change management experience and involvement in service redesign, promoting evidence-based practice
* Experience as lead pharmacist in a busy Patient Services/dispensary environment
