EPSRC FIBE3 CDT PhD studentship with AtkinsRéalis: Enabling a natural capital approach to infrastructure transitions
Join to apply for the EPSRC FIBE3 CDT PhD studentship with AtkinsRéalis: Enabling a natural capital approach to infrastructure transitions role at University of Cambridge
Overview
This is a four-year (1+3 MRes/PhD) studentship funded through the Cambridge EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Future Infrastructure and Built Environment: Unlocking Net Zero (FIBE3 CDT). The program aims to lead a transformation to net zero infrastructure through industry partner collaboration and innovative doctoral training for diverse cohorts. The training combines world-class research with cohort-based learning to equip students with the skills to shape infrastructure for net zero in the UK. Details at https://www.net-zero-fibe-cdt.eng.cam.ac.uk/.
Partnership and Project Focus
The project collaborates with AtkinsRéalis, a global engineering and nuclear organization dedicated to transforming infrastructure and energy systems. It develops methodologies to incorporate natural capital services into infrastructure planning, identifying services like climate resilience, mobility, and carbon storage, and integrating these into infrastructure modeling platforms to support stakeholder actions and improved outcomes.
Project Objectives
1. Develop a quantitative methodology for natural capital services in infrastructure strategies.
2. Apply this methodology to assess contributions to net-zero, resilience, and economic growth in the UK.
3. Engage stakeholders to coordinate actions for infrastructure improvements.
4. Conduct case studies on community engagement in transforming natural and built environments.
Candidate Requirements
Applicants should have or expect a minimum 2.1 degree in engineering, physics, mathematics, or related fields. Experience with programming (e.g., MATLAB, Python), GIS, systems thinking, and an interest in environmental management, infrastructure, and biodiversity are preferable.
Funding and Application
The studentships cover fees and maintenance for eligible home and some international students. Apply online at https://www.postgraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/courses/directory/egegpdfib with course code EGEGR3 and project title "Enabling a natural capital approach to infrastructure transitions".
