We are seeking a Band 4 Occupational Therapy Technical Instructor. The post holder will be part of the wider Occupational Therapy (OT) team and will contribute to the provision of occupational therapy services. You will work in partnership with the multidisciplinary team (MDT) to enable service users to reach their recovery potential and develop the skills necessary to manage their mental illness. You will motivate service users and encourage community re‑integration by liaising with suitable local resources to promote social inclusion. OT Technical Instructors support individuals and groups in the Seven Day Therapies Programme, typically working some evenings, bank holidays, a Saturday and a Sunday across four weekends.
Responsibilities
* Work independently under the supervision of a registered OT as a member of the MDT.
* Use technical, creative, psychosocial and daily living skills to assist in providing therapeutic activities for individuals and groups of service users.
* Take responsibility for leading the development of service user projects and ensure activities used focus on social inclusion and skills development.
* Communicate with service users, carers, team members and OT colleagues, providing feedback on therapeutic activities.
* Attend all relevant mandatory training and contribute to CPD through participation in training and development opportunities.
* Contribute to formal OT assessments of service users under the guidance of a registered OT and provide feedback on their occupational functioning.
* Assist and support service users to achieve their goals, engaging in ongoing assessment and treatment of service users and adjusting interventions based on fluctuating needs.
* Implement, evaluate and modify OT interventions and develop specific socially inclusive projects under supervision.
* Maintain up‑to‑date electronic and written records in accordance with Professional and Trust standards.
* Report effectively to the MDT on service users’ progress in areas such as self‑maintenance, productivity and leisure.
* Under supervision, facilitate or co‑facilitate planned group work and individual activities.
* Ensure relevant national and local policies are implemented.
* Work effectively as a member of a team by providing a programme of ward, department or community‑based therapeutic activities.
* Assist in the implementation, evaluation, and modification of OT interventions.
* Under the supervision of a registered OT, develop and implement specific socially inclusive projects to meet the needs of service users.
* Take on delegated tasks to contribute to the safe and smooth running of the service and demonstrate the ability to critically evaluate current research and apply it to practice.
* Participate in local audit and research projects to broaden research and development skills.
* Use appropriate methods of communication, including with those who experience difficulties in communication for any reason.
* Attend the Trust‑wide OT Support Worker’s Development group.
* Ensure timely reporting of results to the MDT and reflect on personal practice through professional and operational supervision and appraisal guided by KSF.
Person specification
Qualifications
* Qualification pertaining to health and social care, e.g. City & Guilds or Health & Social Care NVQ Level 2, or equivalent skills acquired through in‑service development or experience.
* Evidence of continuing professional and personal development.
Experience
* Demonstrable experience of working in a health, social care or teaching setting.
* Experience of report‑/letter writing and form‑filling.
* Experience of training others in technical or leisure skills.
* Experience of working both independently and in a team, providing group and one‑to‑one interventions.
Knowledge and skills
* Ability to work single‑handed in ward and community settings.
* Understanding of the needs and difficulties of people who experience mental health problems.
* Group work skills and awareness of social inclusion and skills development, ensuring activities focus on these objectives.
