We are seeking a highly professional and fluent Hausa/English Interpreter to provide accurate, impartial, and confidential language services across various settings, including but not limited to, legal, medical, social services, and business environments. The primary goal is to facilitate clear and effective communication between English speakers and Hausa speakers.
This role requires native or near-native fluency in both languages. While formal interpreting qualifications or proven experience are highly desirable, we encourage applications from exceptionally fluent candidates eager to start or advance their careers in professional interpreting.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide Interpreting Services: Deliver accurate and comprehensive consecutive and, where required, simultaneous interpretation between Hausa and English speakers.
* Maintain Impartiality: Adhere strictly to professional interpreting standards, ensuring impartiality and confidentiality in all assignments.
* Cultural Liaison: Act as a cultural bridge, clarifying nuances and contextual information to ensure mutual understanding between parties.
* Documentation: Accurately record and document interpreting assignments and complete necessary administrative tasks.
* Professional Conduct: Arrive promptly for assignments, maintain a professional appearance, and uphold a high standard of ethical behaviour.
* Adaptability: Efficiently interpret complex or sensitive subject matter in challenging environments.
Essential Requirements
* Fluency in Hausa (Mandatory): Native or near-native proficiency in spoken and idiomatic Hausa (including understanding of regional dialects where necessary).
* Exceptional Communication Skills: Excellent memory retention, active listening, and the ability to articulate complex concepts clearly in both languages.
* UK Work Eligibility: Must have the legal right to live and work in the United Kingdom.
* Confidentiality: A strong commitment to professional ethics, discretion, and the security of sensitive information (GDPR compliance).
Desirable Skills & Experience (plus point)
* Interpreting Qualification: Formal training or certification in interpreting (e.g., Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (DPSI), Community Interpreting Qualification Level 3 or 6, or equivalent certification).
* Professional Experience: Demonstrable prior experience working as a professional interpreter in sectors such as healthcare, legal (police/courts), or social services.
